Nothing can sap a person's strength and hope quite like a cancer diagnosis—unless it is the energy-stealing chemotherapy and surgeries faced in the fight against cancer. But one can find hope and strength in the pages of Scripture and in the experience of someone who has been there.

Strength Renewed is an encouraging devotional for those living in the valley of cancer. Meditations combine Scripture and stories from the author's own experience and can be read in sequential order to move the reader through a typical cancer journey from diagnosis through treatment. Each devotion also stands on its own, so readers can go directly to the entry that speaks to their need. Each devotional includes a short prayer and a Scripture verse for encouragement.

Shirley Corder's Strength Renewed is not just for those who suffer or have suffered from breast is also for those who suffer from depression, anxiety, lethargy, pain, and all other "cancers" in life. From page one I found myself uplifted by Shirley's words. Although I have read the passages of Scripture before, I reread them with new understanding and new life. Just as her book provides new life to hope. I am listing a few things at the beginning that captured me so thoroughly that I went back and reread that chapter of meditation: " Jesus and his disciples came across a man who had been blind all his life. 'Who's to blame for this man's blindness?' the disciples asked Jesus. 'No one," Jesus replied. He explained that God's power would be revealed as a result of the man's disability.... ...Cancer is finite. God is way bigger." (p.25) "...Despite his difficult circumstances, Paul believed that Christ was in control. He believed God could use him even while under house arrest. Instead of lamenting his misfortunes, he continued to encourage others...'Is it possible that I am right where the Lord wants me to be? Does he want to use my circumstances to reach out to others?" (p.27) "...Job went through far worse than I did...Throughout that dreadful time, Job saw no sign of God's love and compassion...The tortured man examined his life and searched for where he'd gone wrong...he'd been disobedient at time. He'd questioned God's wisdom and even cursed the day of his birth. Yet he'd attempted to live close to God. After all he went through, Job arrived at the conclusion:'God knows every step I take.' Job only had to believe." (p.38) "I read of a family who had a time of prayer based on 2 Chronicles 20:6. One of them prayed, 'Are you not the God in heaven?' Another family member followed with, 'Are you not the God who sealed the mouths of lions and spared Daniel?' Then another added, 'Are you not the God who fed five thousand people with a few small fish and loaves?'" (p.40) This one is my favorite for it shows the magnitude of who God is. Something that our puny brains will never truly grasp. "...Stephen...walked into the ward...presented me with a small stuffed lion...No one else to comfort me, I pulled him close and tucked him under my cheek. That little lion...gave me something to hang on to." (p.48) This last one is poignant. Is not Jesus the Lion of Judah? Is He not who we should hang on to? Throughout this book I was met with new ideas, new wondering, and new hope. Shirley Corder was right. God put her where she was needed and used her for His Glory. A highly recommended book, one that far surpasses all other meditation books I've encountered, this is something that no one should be without. Have it sit next to your Bible and refer back to it again and again...and have a highlighter and pen to make notes.

An inspiring book for anyone facing breast cancer, or any other health challenge. Ms. Corder includes scripture and interpretation that is helpful and comforting. She goes through the typical stages of grief; has fears; and has times of great joy. It is an easy to read book which I highly recommend.

I am not a breast cancer survivor, but I've staggered through other life storms, hanging on by the fingernails, not sure whether I'd survive one more tempest. It is to the storm-tossed that author Shirley Corder's Strength Renewed speaks compellingly, asking familiar heart cries. Are you still there, God? Who did this? Why me? What now? But also offering a lifeline of faith, hope, comfort birthed from the author's own odyssey through the dark valleys and deep pits of breast cancer. Above all the precious reminder that however raging the storm, sanctuary can be found in the cradling, comforting, all-powerful hand of a loving heavenly Father. This book is also a great resource for family and friends of those battling cancer--a lot of practical information and tips along with the inspirational. Recommended reading and sweet comfort, whatever your life's weather.

II'm always on the lookout for good resources to share with friends going through tough times. Shirley Corder's Strength Renewed is the best resource I've found for those diagnosed with breast cancer. Shirley doesn't shy away from addressing the pain and fears every cancer patient faces, but her optimistic outlook and gentle humor dominate these devotionals. More importantly, she testifies to God's care and love even while going through the "roller coaster of emotions" that accompanies cancer treatment. In addition, she gives friends and family tips on what to say and what NOT to say to someone with cancer. Though I tend to be suspicious of reviews that give nothing but praise, I can't think of anything negative to say about this book. I give it my highest recommendation.

Highly Recommended - Not Just For Cancer Patients From ants to eagles, nothing escapes the author's attention in this transparent spiritual diary through the valley. Her honesty and spiritual depth will encourage the reader, no matter the trial at hand. While the details focus on breast cancer and that particular journey, many of the meditations are pertinent to people going through other trials. The scriptures she cited are the ones I fell back on after the tragic loss of three grandchildren. They are places I seek solace and comfort when trying to comfort the surviving mother who nearly died at the same time. And the search for meaning that we need to leave in the hands of God is the same for every trial in the believer's life. I have no concept of how one gets through the trials of life without a faith in God. This book, Strength Renewed, gives the reader a means of establishing that relationship. While specific to breast cancer and by extension to other cancer survivors, this book should not be neglected by anyone seeking to deepen a relationship with God. It is, perhaps, one of the reasons God allowed the author to go through this valley. Well written, honest, and spiritually sound, I will be recommending this book and giving it to others

Strength Renewed Mediations for Your Journey through Breast Cancer Shirley Corder ©2012 Revell division of Baker Books Group ISBN 978-8007-2023-0 (pbk) 197 pp. plus appendices Strength Renewed contains ninety short (two pages each) thoughts about surviving the journey through the valley of cancer. What author Shirley Corder learned during her experiences will help others. She relates major as well as small problems that impacted her life during treatment and recovery. Strength Renewed will encourage those battling cancers of any kind and also family members and friends. Shirl speaks with truth, concern and honesty in this easily read book. The meditations about the emotional impact of cancer on patients are especially helpful. Probably every patient has unexpected, conflicting feelings. They and the family need to know that's part of the often overwhelming process. I met Shirley Corder of South Africa years ago in Maryland and was attracted by her effervescent, caring personality. As fellow writers and RN's, cancer survivors and followers of the Lord Jesus Christ, we both understand the roller coaster of cancer. We experienced, through the ups and downs, help from God that made the trip endurable and worth while. You can know that, also. Let Shirley Corder's insights in Strength Renewed help you. If you don't know anyone with cancer, you likely will sometime in the future. This book is a valuable resource for families, patients, medical personnel, care-givers and spiritual advisors.

This is an extremely encouraging book for a hard time. When I was diagnosed as having breast cancer a friend of mine connected me with a breast cancer survivor, Rita, she is friends with. Rita immediately sent me an eBook copy of this wonderful book. It was an incredible blessing to me. Shirley is so open and honest about what she went through during her treatment. She even shares a number of times when she had lapses in good judgment and the lessons that God taught her through them. I found each short meditation to be extremely encouraging as I went through my treatments.  I hope to be able to buy copies of this fantastic book to gift to other women when they are diagnosed with this dreadful disease. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Strength Renewed is a book not only for those facing cancer. I'm not in the cancer valley, and I don't know of anyone going through the cancer valley, and yet I've enjoyed Strength Renewed immensely. Shirley's talent and humor shine through her writing. The devotions are applicable for any tough situations one may face and the reader merely has to mentally replace the word cancer for their own particular situation. No matter what you're going through, Strength Renewed will bless and encourage all who will listen to God speak through the pages of this book.
