Overview

Set in Barbados, the poems in Sun of the Son were awarded the Corson Bishop Poetry Prize, the Dorothy Sugarman Poetry Prize and the American Academy of Poets Prize at Cornell University. The voices in this collection incorporate the cultures and creoles of the islands, the remembrance and continuity of Africa, the influence of European and American writers, and mythologies from Old and New Worlds. Like many Caribbean poets, the writing is assimilative and embracing, yet uniquely native. Vernon L. About the Author

Vernon L. Jackman is an award winning poet and educator who holds bachelors and masters degrees from Cornell University. As Director of Pre-College Programs at New Jersey’s William Paterson University, he introduced students from kindergarten through high school to the importance attending college. He created an after-school program for over 200 k-8 students with a grant from New Jersey After 3, Inc. He currently resides in South Carolina with his wife, Dr. Lorraine Jackman, and their two daughters.
