B) When the unexpected happens?
Most of us pick control and predictability. Yet research reveals a counterintuitive truth: surprise is the key that unlocks growth, innovation, and connection. It is also the secret ingredient in our best memories.
Through colorful narratives and compelling scientific findings, authors Tania Luna and Dr. LeeAnn Renninger shine a light on the world's least understood and most intriguing emotion. They reveal how shifting our perception of surprise lets us thrive in the face of uncertainty. And they show us how surprise acts as a shortcut that turns a typical product into a meaningful experience, a good idea into a viral one, awkward small talk into engaging conversation, and daily life into an adventure.

Fantastic!!! This book completely changed my perspective on what surprise actually is. Surprise isn't just about crazy surprise parties and people jumping out at you from bushes - it's also about the low-intensity surprises that can make your everyday life a little bit better. Things like unexpected kindness from a stranger, switching up your routine, or trying something new. This book is well-written and completely enlightening!
I won't say I'm a control freak but I will admit I'm a fan of control. I'm the friend who always tries to suss out a surprise before it happens so I can a) be prepared and b) say I was right. This book inspired me to let go a little and try to embrace the unknown (and surprise) in my everyday life. It's well-written and accessible, and I was fascinated to learn more about the science of surprise and the psychology behind our society-wide fear of it. The future is unknown, people, and it's time we learn to adapt and lean into the surprise of life. Great read--I recommend it!
SURPRISE by Tania Luna and LeeAnn Renninger not only offers a fascinating explanation of how our bodies react when we encounter surprise, but also truly helpful insights into how we can use surprise to make our lives richer. I've already started taking different routes home, using surprise in my work, and even to create what I hope are more memorable and more special experiences for my toddler. Love this book! Great for anyone looking for accessible and fun pop science, with an undercurrent of self-help. I actually think anyone with a business would benefit from reading it.
