Swarthmore Borough

The borough of Swarthmore, a little over a square mile in area and located in Delaware County, was incorporated in 1893. The impetus for its transition from a rural hamlet into a thriving, broad-based community came from the founding in 1864 of Swarthmore College, a coeducational college founded by members of the Society of Friends (Quakers).
