About the Author

Dr. Caroline Leaf holds a PhD in communication pathology from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. Since 1981 she has researched the science of thought as it relates to thinking, learning, renewing the mind, gifting, and potential. Dr. Leaf is an international and national conference speaker on topics relating to optimal brain performance, such as stress, toxic thoughts, male/female brain differences, thinking and learning, controlling our thought lives, wisdom, and how to identify and use one's natural gifts. She is frequently interviewed on TV stations around the globe, has published many books and scientific journal articles, and has her own TV show starting in 2013. Leaf and her husband, Mac, live with their four children in Texas.

This is a great book! It explains how your mind works and how to "fix" it and clean up your thought life, which results in curing ailments and eliminating stress. This book is a life changer!

This is a wonderful book. Dr. Leaf is an author I love, trust, and respect. Switch on Your Brain, if read and applied, could solve a multitude of physical, emotional, and mental problems.

Extremely well written. It was really helpful in clearing up negative thought patterns and redirecting thoughts. It is really interesting to see how what she says lines up with Joyce Meyer's book "Power Thoughts"

The book explains how our thoughts affect our mind which feeds our brain. What we read or view feeds our minds Negative thoughts and fear are toxic to the mind.

This book is terrible mental health advice, terrible science, terrible theology, and terrible writing. Dr. Leaf is not an expert on mental health, cognitive neuroscience, gene expression, quantum physics, or theology. She is a speech pathologist. I am also not an expert in these fields, but I am a Christian with a B.S. degree in psychology and chemistry and a Ph.D. in biology, and I can tell you that she has a fundamental misunderstanding of each of these topics. Mental Health: She says that treating depression with antidepressants is "biblically and scientifically incorrect." She makes the unfounded claim that "75 to 98% of mental and physical illness comes from one's thought life," implying that if anyone has ANY health issue, it’s probably their own fault for not thinking better. She also blames PTSD on the person who has it because they "did not choose, process, or react correctly to the event" while they were being traumatized! Neuroscience: She conflates neurons with thoughts, which are actually the result of neural ACTIVITY. She says that neurotransmitters carry electrical impulses, which they don’t. She describes memories as branches that are glued on a neuron tree but fall off when a “toxic” memory is destroyed, or as proteins that denature when we forget. Memories are the result of the ACTIVITY of connected neurons; as we learn, those neurons increase the number of connections, and we forget with a decrease in connections, NOT denatured proteins, NOT branches coming "unglued" and falling off of a neuron. Her doctoral thesis on a theory of thought has been cited by ZERO other authors, completely ignored by cognitive neuroscience. Gene expression: She says RNA is "a type of protein that...makes a photocopy" of DNA. RNA is a Nucleic Acid, NOT a protein (Bio. 101). And RNA IS the copy, actually a negative, of DNA. She incorrectly says that we can "choose" to switch genes with our thoughts; she doesn't say that the work she cites was on “learning” by neurons in the abdomen of a sea slug. Quantum physics: She gets the definition wrong, saying that "quantum means 'energy;'" quantum actually means "discrete quantity.” She claims that "the basic ingredients of quantum physics are paying attention, thinking and choosing, and consequence" and that quantum mechanics measures free will. The basic ingredients of quantum physics are subatomic particles, which are the only things that quantum mechanics measures. Scripture: Her favorite verse is taken COMPLETELY out of context: "As he thinks in his heart, so is he" (Prov. 23:7a NKJV). Actual verse: “Do not eat the bread of a man who is stingy; do not desire his delicacies, FOR HE IS LIKE ONE WHO IS INWARDLY CALCULATING. ‘Eat and drink!’ he says to you, but his heart is not with you” (Prov. 23:6-7 ESV). She praises the bleeding woman who touched the hem of Jesus' robe for applying Gen. 11:6b, leaving out that this verse was a REPRIMAND by God to the builders of the tower of Babel. She also makes pantheistic claims ("we are all part of God"). She claims that we can bring ourselves closer to perfection through positive thinking with a little Jesus sprinkled in; she leaves out that we are sinners in need of salvation by grace. She likewise takes out of context and distorts her other sources. Even worse, in comparing her book to just 8 of her sources, I found 50 cases of copying. I have contacted the publisher about the plagiarism, but in the meantime, please invest your money elsewhere!!!

Switch On Your Brain: The Key to Peak Happiness, Thinking, and Health by Caroline Leaf was a well written book that I found very interesting and I liked that I was able to understand it all with ease. As a psychology graduate I found the content particularly interesting and I wish I could have read it when I was working on my bachelor's degree in psychology as it would have worked well with multiple papers I had to write! I received this book for free for only my honest review.
