Sword Art Online: Aincrad, Vol. 1 (manga) by Reki Kawahara

In the year 2022, gamers rejoice as Sword Art Online - a VRMMORPG (Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) like no other - debuts, allowing players to take full advantage of the ultimate in gaming technology: NerveGear, a system that allows users to completely immerse themselves in a wholly realistic gaming experience. But when the game goes live, the elation of the players quickly turns to horror as they discover that, for all its amazing features, SAO is missing one of the most basic functions of any MMORPG - a log-out button. Now trapped in the virtual world of Aincrad, their bodies held captive by NerveGear in the real world, users are issued a chilling ultimatum: conquer all one hundred floors of Aincrad to regain your freedom. I pick this book up with the expectation that it was going to be horrible because of what I had heard from others. I was pleasantly surprised when this book turned out to be fantastic. I find Asuna and Kirito's relationship very adorable and surprisingly relatable. They are one of, if not my favorite manga relationship. The story is good, though a bit rushed at the end. The character design and art is also good and the action scenes are well drawn. My only real problems with this story is that the Yui part of the story seemed a bit dragged out and pointless and the game mechanics in the world of SAO are confusing. If you like good romances and don't mind a few nonsensical moments, this manga is right for you.

I hadn’t heard of this before until the anime. The show is really good, same with this volume.

This follows the story well. but i can't get over this books art style. i not sure what it is. i feel its too childish for me. if your looking for a more true art style to the anime. Sword Art Online:Progressive is a better choice and if you've seen the anime it's different enough to warrant a read as its told from more of asuna's perspective.

If you've seen the anime i'd have to say that this can't portray the most epic aspects of the story and the world they're in(a still picture can only show so much). But it does a very good job at telling the story, but it does leave out some plot and characters and adventures from the show so thats a bit disappointing. But regardless, if you loved the show or are looking for a very unique story with romance and action you'll want to check this out!. The art work is beautiful, the characters design is very nice to look at.
