I am really into natural hair (my hobby is understanding the science behind natural hair and hair care...and I am also interested in learning more about styling), and I still went into this book with an open mind hoping to learn something new. I thought the excerpts that I read looked good and I was very much looking forward to reading it. In short, I learned nothing from this book. It was not the least bit helpful. I purchased this book thinking that I would get some helpful (and somewhat scientific) information about hair structure, type, texture, etc. The book starts off promising, but unfortunately, it goes down hill from there. Throughout the book, the author throws out the names of products that she recommends without saying why. She does not compare products, does not talk about ingredients (good or bad), does not compare the effect of these products on various hair types/textures...nothing. She just says: Oh, use Carol's Daughter for XYZ. It makes the reader question why she is really recommending these particular lines/products. She also recommends that the reader go to a professional stylist to get their hair done, but never really explains why....Hmmm, could it be because she is a professional stylist?? Even for simple things, like steam treatments (which you could get with a huetiful steamer at home, btw), she says these services must be done by professionals only. Why? I have had steam treatments done in both a salon and at home, and really, my at home treatment left my hair just as soft (if not softer) than the salon's steam treatment. Again, the book is extremely conclusory and self-serving. Almost the entire book consisted of Da Costa bragging about the work she had done with celebrity clients and how much they loved working with her. And how so many magazines wanted to book her for shootings, etc. I did not purchase this book so that I could hear how great a stylist other people (and the author herself) thought the author was. Do not purchase this book if you are looking for real hair care information that is not conclusory. If you are looking for a quick read, then check out the book by Hair Rules salon owner, Dickey. I would not say that his book is the bible for natural hair care by any stretch, but it is much, much better than this one. Also, do not purchase this book to read on your blackberry through BNN e-reader. No pictures are included, which pretty much defeats the entire purpose of the book. I am really disappointed that I wasted my $9.99 on this book.

I'm in the process of growing out of my relaxer and this book offers advice on hair products to used to keep the hair conditioned and looking good in the process. The book is also filled with lots of wonderful pictures to give you and idea of how you would want to wear your hair styled in its natural state.

I cannot decide if Lisa Akbari "the hair doctor" or this box by by Diane Da Costa, Blair Underwood (Foreword by), Paula T. Renfroe (With) is better.  Both were helpful to me.
