Mrs. Spinelli has done it again! This is a fantastic book to start a discussion about the blessings your family has. I really like the simple illustrations. They go perfectly with the story, and have a whimsical feeling to them. I like how the book shows the kids dressing up / interacting with parents for the careers. That was cute. This book would make a nice edition in any home or classroom. The two characters could be any children, and young kids will love that. There is a sweet rhyme throughout the book, making it a perfect read-aloud for young children. *NOTE* I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

One of the Thanksgiving traditions that we have in our family is to go around the table and express what we are thankful for before partaking in the meal. I've always delighted in the quirky and unconventional things that my children and now my grandchildren come up with. But doesn't that capture the true essence of thankfulness? It's easy to be thankful for the big major things like food and shelter but it's just as important to be thankful for the everyday ordinary things as well. As you read through this book with your little ones you'll be reminded about those things too! I'm not sure which part of this book I'm more enamored with, the words or the illustrations. Eileen Spinelli has used her wonderful knack with rhyming verse to create a whimsical story that captures the thought process of a young child. Archie Preston and his eccentric illustrations are the perfect fit for this delightful story about a family's thankfulness. Eileen Spinelli and Archie Preston make an absolutely delightful team and it is my hope that they will join up again and again to bring all of us books that are sure to be read over and over. Everyday Blessings Just this morning I penned gift number 4,013 into my gratitude journal where, for four years, I have been recording everyday blessings: candle light before dawn; everyone home for dinner; first apple pie from our very own tree. Eileen Spinelli has created a rhyming picture book that will set readers onto the path of remembering all the reasons we have to be Thankful. With Archie Preston’s water-color images of a family playing dress up, enjoying the outdoors, and doing life together, Thankful celebrates, in rhymed couplets, a spirit of gratitude from the perspective of various professions: “The waitress is thankful for comfortable shoes. The local reporter, for interesting news. The gardener’s thankful for every green sprout. The fireman, for putting the fire out.” Parents will enjoy introducing their children to the critical truth that every position in life — a desk in the third grade; a spot on the soccer travel team; a chair in the school band — provides a vantage point from which to view the world and to give thanks. And why not follow up with a family art project in which everyone makes up a short rhyme about thankfulness and then draws a picture to match? Design a cover incorporating your family’s name, staple them all together, and make a family book of thankfulness to put on display along with Spinelli’s Thankful, a visual reminder of why we celebrate that terrific November holiday. Maybe it’s not only the children who need this lovely fall-themed story book. Standing on the small square of floor board that my feet occupy when I work at the kitchen sink, I have a choice to make every day: I can bemoan the piles of dishes and the streaked pane of window glass before my eyes — or I can lift my heart in gratitude for family meal time, for the vivid autumn scene just outside my kitchen window, for hot running water and plentiful food, all evidence of grace, all reasons to be thankful. Thankful is a sturdy hard cover book with a dust jacket. It was written by Eileen Spinelli and illustrated by Archie Preston. Most people associate fall with Thanksgiving and being thankful in general. This book is a great example of gratitude for our God given gifts and talents! From the dust cover: Beloved children’s author Eileen Spinelli and illustrator Archie Preston inspire children of all ages with THANKFUL, a whimsical picture book that celebrates the everyday blessings we find in our lives. My thoughts: Thankfulness is something that we try to teach our children at a very young age. When they first learn they can “request” something like a toy, cup or snack we teach our children to say “thank you”. This book uses rhyming to help the reader see how and what people are thankful for. The illustrations with in this book make the book fun. You see the same two little children (a boy and a girl) act out each thing as the words describe what each person would be thankful for: “The doctor is thankful when patients get well. The traveler, for a cozy hotel.” “The dancer is thankful. She loves the beat that stirs her heart and his and feet.” What a fun, easy read and great book for any little one to experience and see gratitude.

Thankful by Eileen Spinelli illustrated by Archie Preston is a new picture book for children that would make a perfect story for Thanksgiving time. The cover depicts a simple cartoon of a fall scene with children playing in the leaves. The abstract, non distinct cartoon leave much to the imagination. The two playful children are not obviously human as they resemble cute little critters. Upon closer scrutiny, the reader sees these are in fact human children and not personified animals with personalities. The story is unexpected in its multiple meanings. Without the illustrations, the words would take on an entirely new meaning, Yet the illustrations depict these children in adult roles and scenarios as if they are play acting. This book will be certain to encourage children to use their imaginations when role playing. Yet on a deeper level, even the adults and parents will read this book and realize that they too take some blessings for granted, In the end both parents and children alike will close this picture book feeling a little more appreciative and thankful for the ordinary aspects of life that are often overlooked. As a blogger for booklook I received a copy of this book published by Zonderkidz for the purpose of writing this review.

I really like this book. It is described as whimsical and that is exactly right. The whole book is written like a rhyme, which I find very enjoyable when reading to children. As I was reading it, my granddaughter immediately came to mind and how she “pretends play.” Just as a child’s imagination jumps from here to there, this book encourages that same imagination – From a waitress being thankful “for comfortable shoes” to a “local reporter for interesting news;” then to “the chef is thankful for plates licked clean; the tailor, for her sewing machine.” Even though this book can and does encourage imagination, it does an even better job of helping us teach our children to be thankful! Being thankful is absolutely something that has to be taught and must begin at the earliest age possible. The illustrations of this book are beautiful. I like the simplicity and the water color effect on all the pages. The illustrator has chosen to center the author’s wonderful words around a family – father, mother, brother, and sister. This is great because, again, teaching someone to be thankful begins at home! “Thankful” is a wonderful book to have in your children’s library and one that you easily can read daily to your children! I will be adding this to my collection!! (rev. P.Howard) DISCLOSURE: A complimentary copy was provided by the publisher to facilitate this review.

I must admit this book drew me in immediately by it's gorgeous whimsical illustrations reminiscent of Roald Dahl books. I was not disappointed reading through this super sweet book full of simple rhymes about different people in society and what they would be thankful for. Along with being a delight to read it is also a great discussion starter to get in a mode of thankfulness for the things in our life. I appreciated the humor also i.e. 'The waitress is thankful for comfortable shoes. The local reporter, for interesting news,' as the waitress trips on the cat tipping the food on the reporter. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it! Please note: Booklook sent me a copy of this book to review - however the review is entirely my own.

Thankful by Eileen Spinelli is a darling book. The story is so sweet and relatable. It talks to every day people and documents the things they are thankful for. The story really gets you thinking about the things around you and how we all have a lot to be thankful for. I love the sweet illustrations and the simple text. It would be an easy book for beginning readers to try to read independently. My two year old loves the book and I think it'll be a great book to read with her for years to come. It's the perfect book to teach kids about being thankful and to kick off the Thanksgiving season.

Thankful is beautifully drawn, rhyming book about how we should be thankful for all the little things. The bright images and easy reading make for a wonderful book for young readers and parents alike. Eileen Spinelli strings together a creative sequence of things everyone should be thankful for but in relation to various people and professions. And while you might think that the book is being released for Thanksgiving it is really just a fun book that happens to have fall colors on the front of it. The illustration is both detailed yet simple and the colors are vibrant. The pictures depict kids and parents playing and participating in various activities and I think all readers will find it enjoyable and think about all the things they are thankful for.
