What a look at earth after an apocalypse. It appears there will still be too many mean, superstitious, or just plain ignorant people alive. Fell in love with the Grambles and Toby. Nicely paced and well written.

Toby was formed in a laboratory with a mixture of cat and human DNA--hence his delineation as a Trilby--by six scientists who have spent the past 40 years in an underground cavern to escape the presumed destruction of the world. As Toby turns twelve, he embarks on an odyssey to find out if he has a soul, venturing out into the world above for the first time. His journey introduces him to various characters, and he learns about himself along the way. This short but powerful story blends several genres--Christian fiction, science fiction, post-apocalyptic fiction--while presenting a relevant contemporary message infused with hope, making it appropriate for younger readers as well as adults.

Reviewed by Hilary Hawkes for Readers' Favorite Angela Castillo’s The Amazing Adventures of Toby the Trilby is a lovely tale for children about young Toby, part cat and part human boy, who has been created by his Grambles (guardians) because they wanted a grandchild. They all live in caverns below ground because above ground The Great Calamity occurred. No one is quite sure exactly what happened, but below ground it is safe and the machines and replicators provide them with everything they need. Except Toby feels he is missing something. He hears a voice telling him to “Find them” and this makes him think he must set off and explore the world above and find his soul and his Soul Creator. On his journey, he rescues Mia from ending up as a human sacrifice. They become friends. Toby discovers good people and not so good people, and all kinds of danger, and the truth of what has happened in the world. He also finds his Creator or God and begins to learn what his purpose in life is to be. The Amazing Adventures of Toby the Trilby is a tender and thoughtful story. It is part of a series about the same character. Castillo has created an appealing story for children that is also a story about the apocalypse. The Christian message is woven carefully and naturally into Toby’s adventure and discoveries. I love the idea of Toby who feels he may have been created out of a hotch potch of things and hasn’t quite turned out right – but then discovers that his Creator carefully designed him like this for a reason all along. The message is that God loves him just the way he is. The story line and language is just right for young readers perhaps around nine plus or could be a book for an adult to share with a child. They will love Toby, a warm and courageous character, both a friend and an adventurer who discovers that he can trust the Creator who made him. Just loved it.

I read this book with my husband and 12-yr-old and we all LOVED it! It's really sweet and a special story. A tale of a pure-hearted hero on his journey to find God. Super-glad we have the whole series to read. We've already started on the second book!

Do you have any idea what a trilby might be? Twelve year old Toby was created by six older scientists who had taken refuge in an underground shelter during something called the “Great Calamity” which caused extensive devastation on the surface of the earth. These caretakers, or “grambles” as Toby calls them, were lonely and wanted a grandchild, so they strung together human DNA, added some cat DNA to fill in the gaps, formed him in a test tube, and brought him to life in an incubator. He has some characteristics of a cat—ears, tail, and claws, but is mostly like a boy and can talk. They called him a trilby. Toby has lived his entire life in the caverns and received an excellent education from the grambles. But as a result of his studies, he has a question which they can’t answer. Does he have a soul? Then one day he hears a mysterious Voice calling him to go into the outer world. There he meets a group of swamp people who worship a goddess Natura, and he rescues a girl about his same age named Mia whom they are going to offer as a human sacrifice. Toby’s hope is for Mia and him ultimately to return to the grambles and build a house near the cave. However, after they travel on a bit, Mia gets hit with an arrow shot by a man who is protecting his village. What happened to cause such a disaster on earth? Will Toby and Mia survive? And most importantly, will he ever find out if he has a soul? The Amazing Adventures of Toby the Trilby is identified as “Christian Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Dystopian,” but don’t let the word “dystopian” turn anyone off. Much of the current dystopian literature for children is dark, gloomy, and often godless, but while Toby and Mia face many trials and hardships, this book is solidly based upon a Biblical worldview and offers glimmers of hope. It is such a refreshing change of pace for those of us who believe the Scriptures to read an adventure-filled science fiction/fantasy type of work in which someone seeks the “Soul Creator,” and in which there are no elements unsuitable for children. Also, Toby is a good role model for courage, perseverance, and kindness toward others. Author Angela Castillo has already written a sequel, The Further Adventures of Toby the Trilby in which a bright light falls from the sky and Toby finds himself on a quest to find the source of the light.

*I received this book from the Author via The Bearded Scribe in exchange for an Honest Review* This was an interesting story. It followed a little boy who was half cat, named Toby. He was genetically created by six scientists who had survived the end of the world because they were lonely. Toby sets out into the remains of the world following a voice only he can hear, to find out if he has a soul since he wasn't created like normal people. There are a handful of spelling errors in the story, nothing drastic. I think this is a very good story for Christian children. It has a strong message about God and how no matter how you look God loves you anyway. It's a very nice bedtime story I think all children, and even older preteens (at least ones with a strong Christian faith) will enjoy immensely. Even though I'm not Christian, I enjoyed the story for what it was. My only regret is that Toby's adventures ended so abruptly. I hope the author will consider sending Toby the Trilby on some more adventures. I give this book 4 of 5 paws
