About the Author

Doris Humphrey is one of the founders of American modern dance. Together with Charles Weidman she created the Humphrey-Weidman Dance Company (1929-19430 to present each other's choreography.
After retiring from performing in 1943, she became Artistic Director for the Jose Limon Dance Company until her death. She taught at The Juilliard School, the Bennington College Summer School of Dance, and as Director of Dance at New York's 92nd Street YMHA she conducted an annual class on choreography, the first of its kind.
