Description: This concise manual of oncology presents practical clinical information in a reader-friendly way while providing surprisingly complete updates and state-of-the-art descriptions of different solid and liquid tumors. Its strengths include the algorithms and useful tables, as well as board review-like questions at the end of each chapter. The list of anticancer agents is up to date and well organized. This is an update of the 2010 edition.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a clear, concise, and comprehensive reference for busy cancer clinicians to use in daily patient encounters. The authors achieve this objective and more with a much richer book than most such guides.
Audience: The intended audience includes oncologists, oncology fellows, residents, students, oncology nurses, and allied health professionals. Certain chapters are more involved than students or allied health professionals might want, although I appreciate the depth of these chapters, which makes this book much more than a cookbook of regimens and treatment options.
Features: The book covers all the types of common solid and liquid tumor as well as general treatment regimen types of hematopoietic cell transplantation, radiation therapy, and anticancer agents. It also includes chapters on supportive care, common oncologic procedures, individualization of cancer care (molecular diagnosis), and clinical cancer genetics. What is best about the book is its use of algorithms and the inclusion of treatment guidelines from national professional associations (e.g., ASH, ASCO, NCCN). The multiple-choice, board review-type questions are helpful. The chapter on anticancer agents is thorough and includes the FDA-approved indications for drugs as well as dose modification criteria. The shortcomings are that the references are not linked to the text and the use of algorithms is not consistent throughout the book: some chapters use them, while others do not.
Assessment: This is a very helpful book that contains the vast majority of clinical information I would need. It is very current and more thorough than most handbooks and manuals. Because of the proliferation of new agents and treatment models, especially in the fields of melanoma, renal cancer, and lymphomas in the past four years, this new edition is warranted.
