The Blockade Runners" by Jules Verne was published in 1865. It tells the story of a British blockade runner during the end of the American Civil War. A ship called “The Dolphin” was about 1,500 tons and was to have very powerful engines, one of the fastest ships afloat. The Glasgow ship owner devises an adventurous plan to run the Union blockade of southern ports during the Civil War, in order to bring a load of cotton back to his city's 25,000 idle looms.
