After the death of his wife, prosperous businessman Chance Boden heads west along the Santa Fe Trail with his son to escape the powerful control of his in-laws. He has plans to establish his own ranch, but instead he finds work with Frank Chastain, owner of a vast amount of land.

Chance doesn't want to work for anyone, but Frank's beautiful daughter, Veronica, gives him reason to delay buying his own holdings. With winter coming, no home in which to live, and Veronica's offer to care for young Cole while Chance learns the ways of ranching in the desert, Chance has little choice but to accept the Chastains' offer to stay on.

When Frank is attacked, his last wish is that Chance marry his daughter, but after dealing with his in-laws, Chance doesn't want anyone coming between him and his son. Then, before Frank dies, his precarious hold on the land he received as part of an old Spanish Land Grant forces him to make a desperate choice to save Veronica's inheritance--and also gives the men who attacked Frank a reason to come after his legacy.

Loved it! Well told story, great characters and the inspired setting of the American South West in the 1800's. The is a romantic thread in this tale but I would say the main theme is family and the way we show them of our love and devotion. My inly disappointment is that the author wrapped up the ending into a short, tidy package. She had the opportunity to expand upon what happened to allow the reader mire satisfied at the way everthing turned out. Particularly the last chapter, befor the Epilogue. The are unanswered questions that implies more books to come that carry on the tale of this lovely family, yet the story was mostly completed so I don't have to read on to be satisfied. HOWEVER, I want to read more of this authors wonderful writing!

Enjoy this period in time. Good story but did not like ending left with unanswered questions.

“He was going so far west, God was going to have to come hunting him, let alone Priscilla Bradford. And Chance was going to go hunting God. He’d neglected God, as well as his son.” Since I have the entire Cimarron Legacy by Mary Connealy to read, I decided to start with the prequel novella. This sets up the background nicely for me! Chance Boden doesn't deal well with his grief after his wife passed away. Leaving the care of his son Cole in the hands of his in-laws, who treat him poorly. Deciding to leave at the first opportunity and go as far West as the trail will take them, he ends up in New Mexico under the roof of Francois Chastian. And as they say, from there the rest is history! Of course he has a beautiful daughter Veronica (aka Ronnie) who falls in love with little Cole first and marries Chance later after tragedy strikes. But really these two had an underlying attraction to fan the fire of love. An enjoyable short story to set the pace of this series. I really like prequels because it gives you a glimpse of what happens before the full length novels! I look forward to seeing Cole grow up and Chance running the Cimarron Ranch in No Way Up, and meeting other characters in all three stories.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND READING THIS NOVELLA BEFORE READING NO WAY UP. Ok, so you don’t have to, but it provides the background story for the parents featured in No Way Up, as we as an explanation as to why the legacy is so important to Chance. It’s a quick read, with Mary’s customary witty banter and I loved it!

This was a fun introduction to the series. I am definitely excited to begin reading the full length novels! I really enjoyed this story and would have loved it to be just a bit longer (I simply wasn't ready to be done with Chance and Veronica's story). But, it did it's job to make me anticipate the upcoming books.

The Boden Birthright by Mary Connealy The Cimarron Legacy Series Book 0.5 The day Chance Boden realized mourning his wife had led to his son wearing lace—was the day he decided he needed a change. And quickly. It wouldn't be easy snatching his own son from his wealthy in-laws, but with good planning, he did. No more ringlets and lace for his son. They headed Out West. Veronica Chastain is concerned about her father. He seems to have a worry on his mind that he's not sharing with her. When a stranger with a young son come to their doorstep, her father gets a new look—a matchmaking look. Seems somebody wants the Cimarron Ranch badly. Bad enough to kill whoever gets in their way. This is the prequel to the series. The mystery continues in the next book; No Way Up.

Mary Connealy has done it again. The Boden Birthright is a novella that sets up her new series The Cimarron Legacy. Chance Boden escapes Boston with his son and no lace to be found. After Chance's wife died they stayed with her mother and father, who live in a mansion. They will do whatever it takes to turn their grandson into a proper young man. Chance plans his escape and heads west, finally stopping in New Mexico. He starts working for Frank Chastain and his daughter Veronica. A shooting, a hasty wedding, and finding unexpected love fill this novella with page-turning anticipation. Will Chance's in-laws find his son? Who shot Frank and left him for dead? I didn't want Chance and Veronica's story to end. Chance has to work through losing his first wife, but he recognizes Veronica's worth and tells her so. I love him as the hero. I can't wait to read the rest of this series.

The Boden Birthright is the latest novella written by Mary Connealy to introduce her new series, The Cimarron Legacy. This story is a quick read to present the background of the leading man, Chance Boden, of her new line of tales! You will meet Chance, as well as his young son Colin, as they journey into America's new frontier. Chance finally finds a spot to establish their new home in New Mexico when he meets Frank Chastain and his beautiful daughter, Veronica! Chance experiences some initial sparks toward "Ronnie" during this introduction; however, you have not idea how the events that are right around the corner will bring dramatic changes to the lives of each character in this tale! This is a series that will definitely be a fun read!

And she does it again!! Here's another 5 Star, Wonderful book from Mary Connealy!!! Just hilarious at times (watch for the part about the longhorn bull!!!) and then thoughtfully poignant at others. If this first book is any indication, this entire series will be Amazing!!
