The Brown Envelope
Prem Singh Tamang's story is a simple, powerful tale of courage and kindness. Born in a small village to a poor family, he paid his school fees by selling milk and vegetables. He became a schoolteacher, then entered public life, always close to ordinary people. Over the years his honesty and hard work made him a beloved leader, and he rose from teacher to most popular Chief Minister of Sikkim, India, home state by India Today, and president of Sikkim Krantikari Morcha.

One moment changed him forever. While imprisoned, a small brown envelope-inside a marked coin and a fifty-rupee note-was given to him by a group of poor women. That small gift rekindled his hope and showed how much the people trusted him. He carried that memory always and later marked the day by celebrating "Ama Saman Diwas" (a day to honour mothers), keeping the women who helped him close to his heart.

When he was released on 10 August 2018 he returned to a hero's welcome, humble and ready to serve his people.

This illustrated book follows his journey from a distant Singling village to Gangtok (capital city), mixing real-life episodes with classic adventure spirit. With gentle watercolour illustration and clear, warm writing, The Brown Envelope celebrates how simple acts of kindness and steady courage can lift one person-and a whole people towards hope.
