The Calling is a future history space opera which tells the story of a young monk's effort to seek his calling. His travels to different planets and settings takes the reader through vignettes ranging from cyber-settings to day-to-day challenges on a rural planet to a vivid military sci-fi setting. The narrative is brisk and a good read. The main character, Hsulor, is interesting and the play of ideas is never boring. The different vignettes differ substantially from one another. The story is imperfect in that it "solves" the character's quest for meaning a bit too soon and a bit too easily. Yet overall I enjoyed the book, and recommend it.
