Navigating Parties If your child has a gluten restriction, you don’t want him to miss out when it’s time for a party. Often, at school parties, the birthday child will bring in cupcakes, cookies, or some other goodie on the “no-no” list for your kid. To keep your child from feeling left out, provide his teacher with some of your child’s favorite packaged snacks to keep on hand. Cookies, chocolates, and muffins are all good choices. Let your child choose his favorites. If it is your child’s birthday, there are some great options for gluten-free treats he can bring to school. Any of the cakes or cookies in this book would be a great choice, or try one of the following options: - Dirt cups: Top chocolate pudding cups with shaved chocolate “dirt” and gummy worms. - Crispy rice squares: Make sure the crispy rice is labeled gluten-free because this cereal can sometimes contain barley malt. I like to use brown crispy rice for added nutrition. Top with sprinkles to make them really festive. - Chocolate fondue: Kids have an absolute blast getting messy and feasting on fondue (which might make this option better suited for at-home parties). It’s great for dipping fruit and marshmallows. Try the Chocolate Peanut Butter Fondue on page 196.
