Overview

The Devil's Choir by Chris Morrow

In "The Devil's Choir," the veil is lifted and we are allowed to look into the shadows, to places where supernatural good and evil do battle-not for the hearts of men but for blood and bone - not in some world of imagination but in a very real rural town in Kansas.

Melanie Elarton is a college student with a unique ability that allows her to see the thoughts of others. Ari is a man of secrets and a member of an ancient order established to fight against the evil things of the spirit. They unite to find a campus serial killer, but in the process, an ancient demonic presence turns the investigators into the hunted.

Twists and turns abound in this shadowy place. Will Melanie's psychic gifts or Ari's depth of experience be enough to save them and help them unravel the mystery before more girls are killed? In these shadowy places where there are no coincidences and there is no such thing as luck, they will have to rely on courage and cunning if they are to find their way back to the light.

About the Author

Chris Morrow is the author of dozens of short stories and novellas appearing in various magazines and anthologies. In 2008 he had three stories finish near the top of their respective categories in the Critters.org Annual Reader’s Poll. Focusing on the dark and sinister, Morrow has gained a name as an up-and-coming horror writer. A recent review by Fatally Yours said of one of his short stories, “When Darkness Falls is a strong, suspenseful story that makes me eager to see what Chris Morrow does in the future…” The Devil’s Choir is his first novel. In it he combines a Christian worldview with the macabre, telling a story that takes place in the shadows where light and darkness mix, where supernatural forces are strong.

Morrow is one of a handful of authors making up the new project Bard & Book. Many of his short stories and a serialized horror novel will be released there in the coming months.

He lives in southwest Missouri with his wife and two young children. He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration. When he isn’t writing, he can be found playing piano in a rock ‘n’ blues band called Sober as a Judge or coaching youth sports.

I received this book as part of Goodreads First Reads program. I was really excited when I found out I would be able to read and review The Devil's Choir. Chris Marrow is a wonderful storyteller. He had me hooked after the first chapter. Ok, it was the prologue, but still he had me hooked. He knows how to capture the reader's attention and keep it. The Devil's Choir is a mystery, thriller, good vs. evil, and almost love story, all combined into one. I love Melanie, the main character. She is a combination of the beautiful girl next door who knows exactly what she wants and a woman who knows how to go about getting it. She just doesn't realize what the world has in store for her. She thought she was moving across the country for an education, however, it didn't turn out that way. I also really like Ari, the male main character. He took Melanie under his wing and showed her what his world was like. It opened her eyes to so much more than she even knew was possible. In just a short time, they ended up being true friends, which is hard to come by. I would really like to know more about Melanie's back story, which I hope comes out in a sequel. I would love for this to be a series about her and her journey through life. I am really looking forward to the next books by Chris.
