The First Lie by Diane Chamberlain

An e-original short story that sets the stage for bestselling author Diane Chamberlain's novel Necessary Lies (September 2013).

The First Lie gives readers an early glimpse into the life of thirteen-year-old Ivy Hart. It's 1958 in rural North Carolina, where Ivy lives with her grandmother and sister on a tobacco farm. As tenant farmers, Ivy and her family don't have much freedom, though she and her best friend, Henry, often sneak away in search of adventure…and their truest selves. But life on the farm takes a turn when Ivy's teenage sister gives birth—all the while maintaining her silence about the baby's father. Soon Ivy finds herself navigating the space between adolescence and adulthood as she tries to unravel a dark web of family secrets and make sense of her ever-evolving life in the segregated South.

First, I want to point out that this is a short story intended as a lead-in to Necessary Lies, the author's new full-length novel coming out in September . I'm sorry to say that Ms. Chamberlain has received quite a few "reviews" castigating her for it's length and cost (99 cents) despite the fact the description very clearly labels it as a short story which, in the publisher's words, sets the stage for the new book. It could not have been stated any more plainly. Set in the rural South, this tale introduces us to a young teen and her very limited world. It's easy to imagine what Ivy's life is like amid the societal issues of the day including teen unwed pregnancy and the possibility of forbidden interracial relations at a time such a thing was potentially dangerous and certainly life-altering. The first lie might be the identity of the baby's father but an even greater lie festers and reminds us of one of the most shameful episodes in our collective past. I have never read anything by this author until now but these few pages have really engaged me in Ivy's story and make me want to see what her future will be.

Thirteen-year-old Ivy Hart will melt your heart with her view of the world and what is going on around her. As a child growing up in 1958 on a tobacco farm in North Carolina, poor, naive and at the age where she is not quite a woman and not quite a child, Ivy tells of the events surrounding the birth of her unmarried sister's child in a time when this is one of the greatest taboos of society. With The First Lie, Author Diane Chamberlain allows Ivy to tell her story in her own words and with her own voice, adding to the charm, enchantment and emotional power of this short read, while leaving the reader eager for "the rest of the story." This review copy was provided by netGalley and St. Martin's Press in exchange for my honest review. Loved the e-short story setting the stage for Necessary Lies (which I have already read --an advanced reading copy—and loved it)! It was nice to go back and learn more about Mary Ella and of course Ivy—small town with big secrets and lies. Would highly recommend both! Diane never disappoints!

The First Lie is the novella to Necessary Lies and it give you a early glimpse into what happened before Necessary Lies came out. Ivy is a thirteen year old, living with her older sister who is fifteen and pregnant, and their grandmother, living on a tabacco farm as tenants. One night will change everything that Ivy knows and a future that will be filled with secrets. It's 1958 in rural North Carolina, Ivy has sneaked out the house to go play a game in a church with her friend, Henry. When Ivy comes back early in the morning, her sister is about to have the baby and the first lie is about to be told to Ivy about what is gonna happen to her sister. After the baby is born and the lie has been told to Ivy, when Ivy overhears an conversation between her grandmother and a social worker, she realizes that nothing is ever gonna be the same and it sets us up for what happened in Necessary Lies! This may be a very short read, it took me about 30 minutes to read it but it had me wishing that I had Necessary Lies so i can know what happens! As i read this story, I just couldn't believe the lie that was told and you just think about what life was like back then to be able to do something like this and you know this really happened in real life. As with all of Diane's books, you just wish that you had enough money to buy them all to devour them in a couple weeks time! Thank You to Diane Chamberlain for giving people like myself a deeper insight on what is to come in Necessary Lies! This book came from my own personal Library.

I knew it would be short but there was nothing to it. I bought Necessary Lies though. Wonder if the First Lie was necessary

I love Diane Chamberlain's boiks and had checked out Neccessary Lies from the library when I saw that this was the prequel to it. Bought it on my Nook and it was not even 33 pages!! What a rip off for .99 cents!! (Plus tax!) I would'nt even call it a short story because it was too short! Just feel like I wasted my money fir less than 33 pages. I will be checking that before I purchase from now own. I expected morefrom this wonderful author. Very dissapointed!

This short story helped set the stage for the author's full-length novel Necessary Lies.  I just finished reading both and I'm so glad that I started with The First Lie.  It really pulled me in and made me want to know the characters and what would happen to them.  This is the first time I have ever bought a prequel, but it won't be the last.

It's the prequel to Necessary Lies by the same author and sets up the next book very well. It's not long, but that doesn't matter, because if it catches you you'll be buying Necessary lies right away.
