Overview

THE GHOST CHRONICLES by Marlo Berliner

THE GHOST CHRONICLES by Marlo Berliner is a YA paranormal with romantic elements and adult crossover appeal, perfect for fans of If I Stay, Twilight and the movie, Ghost.

Can Michael get to heaven before the devil gets him first, and if it means leaving Sarah is he sure he still wants to go?

Michael Andrews had everything a loving family, a great girlfriend and a promising basketball career. That was before the accident that took his life. Now, he’s a ghost, wandering among the living, struggling to understand why he’s stuck. All he wants is to move on.

That is until he meets Sarah, an attractive young girl who died just as tragically as he did. The only trouble is falling in love and binding oneself to another soul is forbidden, for it may keep one or both of the souls bound to earth for longer than they should be.

To make matters worse, there’s also a danger in going too far with Sarah, because the “joining” of two souls in the afterlife is also strictly forbidden and they don’t know what will happen if they do go that far. Each time they touch they can feel the boundaries of their energies slipping perilously into one another.

Things get even more complicated as Michael learns he’s being pursued. Demons are after him because he’s a marked soul, a soul the devil wants very badly for some unknown reason.

So, maybe falling in love in the afterlife isn’t such a good idea.

Michael Andrews has a charmed life, that is, until his young life is cut short due to an accident. But contrary to popular belief, he doesn’t move on to Heaven or Hell; he’s roaming haplessly among the living. Not sure what to do or how to feel, he clings to the past and pines for the future he’ll never get. But then he meets Tom who becomes like a mentor to him. He discovers he’s got the Devil on his tail, hunting him down to drag him into Hell. Just when the afterlife was getting interesting… Michael on the run when he bumps into Sarah, a ghost just like him, and they instantly connect. Can two spirits fall in love? Anything is possible but it’s against the ghostly rules. Is their love affair over before it starts and why does the Devil want his soul so badly? I’m a huge paranormal fan and this ghostly tale, while not scary in any way, sheds light on what the afterlife might be like. Confusing, sad, overwhelming, happy, are some of the emotions portrayed which made me think long after I finished the book. I took a full star off my rating for the abrupt ending. I know that this is book one in the series but for me to read the next one, there needs to be some kind of conclusion, a plot arc closed, something. Disappointing. I loved the backdrop of New Jersey and the author’s descriptive narration transported me. The world-building in The Ghost Chronicles, while not 100% original, suspended my disbelief completely. I was completely taken into Michael’s head through his POV and his reactions made it an excellent read. The romance, while sweet, made me smile. Michael and Sarah are so cute together, exploring love and desire as ghosts. If you love paranormal with a touching romance, pick this up today. I look forward to reading book two and seeing what happens next. Favorite Character/Quote: “To be warm again, to tingle again, to feel again, these sensations were so familiar, yet already so forgotten.” My Rating: 4 stars

Wow! I was not expecting to enjoy this book quite as much as I did. I get a lot of books for review. Most of them wind up being just ok or books that I have to force myself to read. Sometimes I even have to DNF the book. This was definitely not the case with The Ghost Chronicles. I thought this was going to be your average ghost haunts a house type of story. It was so much more than that! The main character of the book is actually the ghost himself.  There are so many interesting elements to this story. Every moment was something new and exciting. It was a fantastic ghostly adventure! You will get immersed in the spirit side of this world. I was never once bored while reading this book. It held my interest the entire way through. If I had had the time I easily could have read this in one sitting. I actually wanted to! The paranormal elements in this book were spectacular and spot on. There is just so much interesting things to look forward to in this story. Marlo did an absolute fantastic job with this story. She managed to pack so much into one book and make it all fit perfectly. There is so much going on and so much to think on. This would make a fantastic book club read. There are so many discussions to be had after reading this book. I could write on for hours about everything that I enjoyed and the way I felt about this book. Doing so would only give away the entire story and spoil it for others so I will hold back. This book deserves all the accolades and recognition it has received and may receive in the future. Make sue to read it now before everyone is talking about it. I feel like soon you will see the entire booktube community talking about this one. I am so VERY stoked for the next book to come out...and even more excited that I don't have to wait too long. August people! Get to reading this one asap.  One of the things that I found out while reading this book is that the illustration on the front of the book is an actual Bed and Breakfast that is located in Cape May, New Jersey. It is called The Angel of the Sea. I don't want to give to much of the story away....but lets just say that the building is a big part of the book, and that it it may be haunted in the book as well as in real life. You can read more about the real Angel of The Sea by visiting the website HERE. I am lucky enough to live in Pennsylvania and this Bed and Breakfast is only and hour and fourty minute drive from me. (Yes, I did the research. I REALLY want to go stay at this place after reading all about it) Me and my Husband are way overdue for a romantic little getaway. This seems like the perfect spot!   I am so happy that I came across this little gem of a book in my reviewing journey. If I was not a book reviewer, I don't think I would have had the pleasure of reading this book and planning my next getaway...or I should say my first getaway since my Husband and I have been married for 16 years and have never gone on a vacation. I think this a great place to start. Hey! Who knows, maybe I will even make The Angel of The Sea a sort of writing retreat for myself. I think it would be the absolute perfect place for me to get away and finish writing my paranormal novel.  I can't think of any better place. This story and building now hold so much importance to me now. I feel as if I was meant to read this book. I think it might be the key to the inspiration and fuel that I needed to finally finish writing my own book. If I do end up using The Angel of the

From the very first page I knew this was going to be a good book. I was wrong. It was fantastic! Instantly I felt a connection to the man character Michael who, obviously, dies in a most tragic way. There was never a dull moment nor was there any scrap of detail left out. Marlo built a world I could visualize in my head. One that I could relate to. There was a little love, a little mystery, a little spook but a big life lesson. This was a delightful and easy read for me as I finished it in 3 days (full-time mom & job otherwise I would have finished in one sitting). Highly recommend this book to anyone. It's journey full of imagination and true love that's worth taking! Can't wait for the next installment!

Reviewed by Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite The Ghost Chronicles, Volume 1 is a young adult paranormal fantasy written by Marlo Berliner. Michael had his whole life ahead of him. He had a basketball scholarship waiting for him in the fall and a fun-filled senior summer stretched out in front of him. Better yet, Melissa, his girlfriend of two years, seemed definitely interested in taking their relationship to the next step. After he completed his chores on Saturday, he started to get ready to pick her up from her job and then got into the Mustang that he, his brother and their father had lovingly restored. Everything changed in a moment. As he turned into a bend, a tractor-trailer manned by an overtired, snoozing driver bore down on his vehicle, pinning him in the ensuing wreckage. But Michael felt no pain, and he knew he should have. The out-of-body experience was something else he knew meant trouble, and he willed himself back down into his body. It didn't seem to matter, however, as it became all too obvious that he had died. Marlo Berliner's young adult paranormal fantasy, The Ghost Chronicles, Volume 1 is an imaginative and original story about a young man's entry into a strange, otherworldly existence. He's got no idea why he didn't go up to heaven or down to the other place, and his initial experiences as a ghost are filled with feelings of alienation and despair. Still, the reader can't help but be intrigued as Michael figures out how to visit the places he loved when he was living, and then gets excited as he meets Tom, another wandering spirit who seems to have been around a bit longer and acts as his unofficial mentor. Berliner injects a sweet romance into her fantasy when Michael meets Sarah, a young Irish woman who died in a fall and still haunts the B&B where she met her end. The Ghost Chronicles is filled with conjecture and philosophical concepts that keep the reader thinking and progressing along with Michael. This is an original and thought-provoking story that will keep readers wondering and looking forward to the next book in the series. It's highly recommended.

Reviewed by Joel R. Dennstedt for Readers' Favorite Michael is dead. This is not a spoiler. Marlo Berliner, the author of The Ghost Chronicles, tells the reader this at the beginning of her book, actually offering up a rather vividly detailed account of his accidental but violent passing to ensure the reader understands: Michael is really, truly, completely dead, which is a deft move on her part as Michael’s further life – after death – is the subject of a most beguiling, intriguing, mystery-filled adventure. Michael must learn quickly how to navigate this new reality of death, finding both helpful and conniving other ghosts to guide and to mislead him as he seeks to understand why he was not “taken by the light.” As he searches for a purpose that may or may not come from a Creator, he falls in love. Of course with another ghost. And he must continue to fight off his demons, both real and those imagined. Will he find all that he is looking for? Will he, so to speak, survive? With a literary nod to the movie Ghost, something Ms. Berliner acknowledges in her accompanying blurb for The Ghost Chronicles, and a certain resonance with the Odd Thomas series by the master of the genre, Dean Koontz, the story does remind us frequently that it is intended for Young Adults. And yet, the excellent plotting, precise editing, and well-projected development of storyline all guarantee that the writing is also perfectly suitable for an Old Adult. The familiarity of the worlds depicted both in Ghost and Odd Thomas do not make the reader feel cheated by the similarity found in The Ghost Chronicles. Not at all. Quite the contrary; the reader feels comfortable with the easily recognizable physics involved in ghosthood and needs no overly detailed explanation for the demonic shades that plague Michael and his eternal love.

Reviewed by Tracy A. Fischer for Readers' Favorite Wow! That's all I can say after reading the absolutely fantastic debut novel by author Marlo Berliner, The Ghost Chronicles. Follow the story of Michael Andrews, a young man who seemed to have everything going his way; a great girlfriend and family, a talent in playing basketball and a bright future in front of him. In front of him, that is, until he is killed in a tragic accident. Michael spends some time as a pretty lost soul, not sure what he's supposed to do or why he seems to be stuck among the living. When he meets Sarah, another stuck soul, he starts to feel some hope again, but any relationship they develop is governed by the many rules of the afterlife, including rules against falling in love or getting too close to each other. Will Michael and Sarah ever find peace? You'll need to read this great book to find out! I loved The Ghost Chronicles. Simply loved it. Billed as a young adult novel with crossover appeal for the adult crowd, this book certainly got the attention of this adult. Author Marlo Berliner has done a masterful job in creating a story and characters that her readers will care about, relate to, and continue to think about long after the final words are read. If that isn't a hallmark of a great author, I'm not sure what is. Her scene setting skills are simply second to none, and the setting of the Angel of the Sea Inn bed and breakfast is a perfect place for this afterlife love story to take place. Any reader, young adult or not, who enjoys paranormal fiction, love stories, or just a great work of fiction should absolutely read The Ghost Chronicles. I highly recommend this book, and look forward to reading more from the extremely promising and talented new author, Marlo Berliner, as soon as I possibly can!

From the opening pages to the final page I hated having to put the book down. i became attached to the main character within the first two pages and continued to be intrigued by what would happen next. In addition to the many surprises woven into this first book, the foreshadowing and teasers for future stories keep my interest. A great balance of paranormal and realistic fiction!

The author does a superb job of drawing you in to this unique take on a ghost story. I enjoyed the writing, the characters, and the plot. It is a fun, fast-paced, and interesting look into life after death and what happens to those who are left behind. It begins as a heart wrenching tale of loss which transforms as the story develops into something that leaves the reader hopeful. I can't wait for the next book.
