The GMRS Operator and Repeater Course

The General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) is an easy to use two-way radio service. This book is not intended for a Radio Amateur Operator, and does not include the expansive technical details that might be expected by a Radio Amateur Operator. The book provides some technical details in simplified language as needed to understand the purpose of FCC rules, allowing everyone enjoyment of their radios. Learn how to best use your radio without interfering with others.

The GMRS Operator Course explains GMRS Radio Concepts, GMRS Radio Equipment with the purposes of their various features, GMRS Radio Conversations and their Reach, and FRS hand held transceiver usage and their interaction with GMRS.

The GMRS Radio Concepts section includes Transceivers, Modulation, Band, Frequencies, Channels, and Sub-Channels. The GMRS Radio Equipment section covers Handheld Transceivers (HTs), Mobile Transceivers, Base Stations, antennas, and Repeaters. The purposes of the various features of these are explored. The GMRS Radio Conversations section teaches radio environments, range, operations of repeaters, emergency communications, and the purpose and usage of the mobile-10 codes. The FRS (Family Radio Service) section explains walkie-talkie usage limits, and the limits of their communications with GMRS Radios.

GMRS devices can generally communicate with Family Radio Service (FRS) walkie-talkies. GMRS usage requires a license and operators are required to follow rules. FRS operators are licensed by rule, meaning that by following the rules FRS operators do not need a license.

The GMRS Repeater Course explains GMRS Radio Relay Operating Principals, Preparing for GMRS Repeater Access, and GMRS Repeater Construction.

GMRS Repeater Operating Principals explains how a repeater works, radio horizon, topography, and obstructions. Preparing for Repeater Access teaches how to setup your GMRS station to access a repeater, and common configuration issues. Repeater construction covers the key parts of a repeater and some FCC rules related to their constructions.
