The God-Shaped Heart: How Correctly Understanding God's Love Transforms Us by Timothy R. Jennings

The key to spiritual and emotional health is to grasp the truth of God's transforming love for us and then let that reality influence our own hearts and relationships. It seems simple, but we are experts at complicating simple things. Instead of living lives characterized by love we find ourselves trapped in cycles of shame, violence, and addiction that steal our joy and keep us from loving others--so much so that, by all indications, Christians are living no differently than anyone else when it comes to abuse rates, use of pornography, alcohol and drug addiction, and more.

Christian psychiatrist Dr. Timothy Jennings wants to release us from this prison. With powerful illustrations from case studies and from Scripture, Jennings shows believers who are stuck in addiction, violence, fear, and broken relationships how to experience true freedom through God's transforming love to experience greater health, fulfillment, and well-being.

Have you ever wondered what the term “God is love” really means and how it is supposed to shape not only our knowledge of him, but how it is to shape our hearts as well? Dr. Timothy Jennings has approached this idea and covers it nicely through a well thought out and superbly presented writing. The synopsis of this book is summed up nicely on the back cover: “Dr. Jennings exposes a single idea, misunderstood and deeply rooted within Christianity, that has prevented millions of believers in God from experiencing the freedom and healing of His unfailing love.” I would conclude this book did very well with meeting the expectation laid forth on the above statement. Coming from the perspective of a psychiatrist Dr. Jennings presents 7 levels of thought which define the outlook of Christians. His belief is that most Christians live in level 1-4 which defines God’s actions in our lives under imposed law. This is defined by a faith that has not matured to understanding the principle of design law, that God is love and this defines his actions toward us. Though I have some reservations to fully adopting this scale, I see the validity within it and understand the complexities it holds as well. Over all this book carried well and did not seem to drag on from one chapter to the next. I can’t recommend this to everyone as your next read, but I do suggest if you see God as the one who is watching your every move hoping to catch you slip up so he can judge you, give this a read and hopefully you will gain a new perspective. *I received this book free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. These are my personal thoughts.
