The Great Mother's Lament

I am a Mohawk Indian from Akwesasne. One day I was outside listening to the sounds of mother earth, the breeze going through the trees, waters rushing in the river, and birds greeting each other. Nearby was a highway with a different kind of sound. While sitting on the grass, I felt a drum beat matching the beat of my heart come up from the ground. There was a sad song around those beats.
