Long-time Bible Professor Tells the Compelling Story of Jesus

The story of Jesus is the greatest story of all time. But the repetition and varying order of events in the Gospels can be confusing to readers. As he does in his bestselling book The Whole Bible Story, Dr. William Marty presents the full narrative of Jesus in chronological order. He tells the fascinating account of everything that happened in Jesus' life—from his birth to his ascension—as well as what happened in the church after he left. The Jesus Story is perfect for new Christians longing to get to know Jesus or long-time believers wanting to recapture the awe and amazement of hearing this remarkable story for the first time.

Having read William H. Marty's previous book, "The World of Jesus", I was quite curious of his current book, "The Jesus Story: Everything that Happens in the New Testament in Plain English", and needless to say, I have been very impressed with his work. For a quick background, Dr. William H. Marty is a Professor of Bible at Moody Bible Institute and ha behind his name, two textbooks, "Surveying the New Testament" and "Survey of the Old Testament". With this, Dr. Marty, provides to the layman reader, works that are very easy to read, but with a depth that really brings both the new Christian, the maturing Christian and the mature Christian, books that provide a detail background in both the Old Testament and New Testament, and focusing on the prime subject, Jesus. In the book, "The Jesus Story: Everything that Happens in the New Testament in Plain English", Dr. Marty once again brings to reader, back to the Bible, and following in order, the introduction of Jesus through His birth to what happen to the Church body after Jesus left. What draws me to Dr. Marty's book is the depth of knowledge that he gives to the reader as is obvious not just by his credentials but by his ability to translate what he knows to us, the reader, in a way that doesn't talk down to us, shares the knowledge of the Scriptures to us and at the same time, weaves a story that really drew me in with his style of writing that is conversational and informative. Between discussing the rich cultural background of the times that the New Testament is set in with the theological relevance that will encourage and uplift the Christian believer, Dr. Marty never fails in delivering to the reader, a masterful tale that draws them ever deeper into the bible, particularly the New Testament. This is one of many books by Dr.Marty that I would highly recommend, be it in ebook form or in hard copy form to keep on ones shelf and use to enrich one's bible reading. The paperback runs at 151 pages, but is filled with biblical truth that will keep the reader hanging on to each chapter that runs from the Birth and Childhood of Jesus to such topics as The Story of the Church in Acts. Dr.Marty brings the college courses to everyone and opens up the bible, particularly the New Testament in a new way and light that still holds strong to the Biblical truths of the Bible and providing readers with a refreshing new look to Jesus's world and His story. "The Jesus Story: Everything that Happens in the New Testament in Plain English" is everything that a good reference book on God's word should be about and a book that needs to be on everyone's shelf.

The Jesus Story - Everything That Happens in the New Testament in Plain English is just what it says it is. This is simply the story of the Gospel of Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ, written out in order from birth to death to resurrection, and followed by the growth of the early church in Acts and Paul's ministry. The value in this book for me, one who is familiar with the New Testament and the life of Jesus, is that it aligns the stories in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John into a narrated timeline. The order that this books brings also brings clarity. That is the gift that Dr. Marty shares with us. Written as a factual narrative, not a fictionalized story, this is a valuable book to someone who wishes to understand the overview of Jesus' life and ministry. It gives me a "Just the facts, Ma'am" feeling to read it. It will not replace reading the Bible, but it will aid comprehension. Each chapter contains a summary at the end which sums things up nicely. Well done, Dr. Marty.

11/21/2013 Reviewed THE JESUS STORY By: DR. William .Marty I love the cover on this book. It's beautiful with the building, rocked landscaping and the quite water with sail boat lazily floating by, the beautiful sky above all this as you look out the window or arch of another building (which ever you think it is). I love to look and study the cover of book covers they tell a story all their own. I knew I wanted to read this book and review it because Jesus was the most amazing man on earth, soft spoken, kind, Loving. You'll feel the same way. As the story of Jesus unfolds before your eyes get ready to know Jesus and his life. Loved even to his enemies.with me, my first question is how does he love the people that hurt him so badly and then sentence him to the worst kind of death by nailing him to a cross after he carried it all the way to the (Skull) where he died between two thieves, and even then he said to the thieves that they would be in heaven with him. I smiled as I was reading about the birth of Jesus -- his early ministry, teaching and healing. I smiled as he over turned tables and benches and when he threw the merchants out of the temple. You'll feel you are walking the streets with Jesus and see his miracles and love, later then you are with Judas as you see the portrayal of Jesus go down, You'll feel you are in the city that condemned Jesus and then the tears run as Jesus is taken away to his last days on earth walking with the cross on his back. But when I read the part where DR Williams Holarty told again the story of the Death and Resurrection. Trials of the Jewish Interrogation and then the Roman Interrogation of Jesus the tears began to roll down my cheeks. I cry every time I hear or read this about Jesus. This is a beautifully written book. You'll feel like you are walking the streets with Jesus, you'll feel you are there every step of the way until you see Jesus again!!! Jesus isn't done with us yet!!!!!!!!! I recommend this book highly. Grab it and HAPPY READING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I received this book free from Bethany House for an honest review. I was not required to give a positive review just an honest one. The opinions I have expressed are entirely my own and no one else's. 5 Star ISBN 978-0-7642-1093-8

About the Book: The Jesus Story: Everything That Happened in the New Testament in Plain English The Phone Tree Review: The Jesus Story by Dr. W.H. Marty was a simple read about the life, teachings, works, and impact of Jesus. Written in an uncomplicated style, this book presented key biblical references for the reader’s consideration. Each chapter began with a listing of the main characters and the setting. Throughout each chapter, focal headings were listed, which aided in helping the reader to appreciate more specifically what was being discussed. At the end of each chapter, the author provided a condensed summary of the content. While I did enjoy reading this book, I cannot agree that it does what the title suggests – tell “Everything That Happened in the New Testament,” as it relates to Jesus. With that said, however, I found that what the author did do was to effectively offer material for a general look at Jesus’ story. The way that this book is written allows for new and seasoned students of the Bible to grasp basic level information about people, places, and events. It encouraged further study, while at the same time, it satisfied an elementary curiosity. + (Positive): A simple, easy read written in clear language - (Negative): Scripture references were not immediately cited per chapter, rather they were listed in the table of contents (I would have preferred a quick reference format in each chapter.) The Phone Tree Rating: 4/5 Stars **** A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Bethany House in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review. The words I have expressed are my own. This statement has been placed in accordance with FTC guidelines.

Dr. Marty provides an easy-to-read version of the story of Jesus from his birth to events after his death, including early missionary trips. Each chapter begins with a list of characters featured in that section of the story, as well as the setting of the story and ends with a summary of events from that chapter. I love books like this that take the Bible and put it into language that is easily understood. This one is a little different from others that I have read, where others take events and characters from the Bible and fictionalize them, this one takes the Bible and summarizes events in a very easy-to-understand manner. Although there are different translations of the Bible that are easier to read than others, this book offers more of a summary approach. What I enjoyed the most about this book is that I was already familiar with the topic, but it made me think of it in a different way. Sometimes it is easy to think, "Oh, I already know about this" when reading the Bible and just skim over the section. Because the language is so different in this book than the Bible, it made me stop and think. It is not a line by line paraphrase of the life of Jesus, it is a broad overview that was helpful in seeing the big picture. This book would be perfect for teenagers to read, especially if they experience frustration with reading the language or phrasing in the Bible. I can see where it could give them enough information to hunger for reading the Bible to get all the details of the story. I also think it would be perfect for new believers to get the big picture to give them a basic familiarity to draw on when they read the Bible. Where the Bible can be intimidating to read and understand sometimes, this is a nice, small book that is easy-to-read. This would also be a nice read-aloud with younger children. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. If you want to revisit the story of Jesus with fresh eyes, give this book a try! I received a copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

THE JESUS STORY Everything That Happens in the New Testament in Plain English by Dr. William H. Marty The story of Jesus is a very important story for all to read and know. I found this book very well written and easy reading. It is a great book for new believers in Christ and for non-believer to get an outline of what is in the Gospels. The book should appeal to all believers in Christ and give a refresher to the Gospels and Acts. Dr. Marty has written in story form the story of Jesus in the Gospels and the book of Acts. He has followed the scriptures and given a true rendering of them. The book is not meant to replace the Bible but to create interest in the Bible. I received this book free from Bethany House Publishers for purpose of this review, I was not required to write a positive review, the opinions I have expressed are my own.
