Birds of Paradise Island, off the NE windward side of Tobago, derives its name from the Birds of Paradise brought from New Guinea in the early 1900’s by Sir William Ingram. His heirs donated the island as a perpetual bird sanctuary, and it now hosts some 45 species of exotic birds. The Birds of Paradise did not survive a hurricane in 1963.
