About the Author

Becky Chambers was raised in California as the progeny of an astrobiology educator, an aerospace engineer, and an Apollo-era rocket scientist. An inevitable space enthusiast, she made the obvious choice of studying performing arts. After a few years in theater administration, she shifted her focus toward writing. Her creative work has appeared at The Mary Sue,, Five Out Of Ten, The Toast, and Pornokitsch. The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet is her first novel, and was funded in 2012 thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign.

After living in Scotland and Iceland, Becky is now back in her home state, where she lives with her partner. She is an ardent proponent of video and tabletop games, and enjoys spending time in nature. She hopes to see Earth from orbit one day.

Well writen, great characters you really start to care about, and a plot that does not depend on classical "hero" types saving the day. This is not an action thriller. It is not a space opera. It is just a good story of people working and living together, and growing in understanding. This is very different from most modern science fiction today and yet is most welcome and refreshing! Many thumbs up! J C

I know a lot of reviewers have likened the crew of the Wayfarer to the crew of the Serenity (there some similarities) but that might give readers the wrong impression. This is really a story of blue collar space workers in a galaxy where adventure is easy to find. It is her first work and it is great. Some readers might be distracted by the rough scene parsing in this ebook edit but that small blemish aside you will discover a great story and great characters that introduce you to an exciting universe. Enjoy.

I wasn't sure what I would be getting into with this book, but it came well recommend and now I know why. Characters you come to love inhabit a setting you crave to visit. It is a sci-fi road trip in delightful bright shades. Read this book!

Amazing read! I was impressed by the creativity and expansive depth of detail in the worldbuilding and character development. The relationships between characters and the ideas held within this book were refreshing, kept me on my toes as a reader, and were clearly expertly devised. I immediately searched the Nook store for more by this author the instant I finished the book... I would highly recommend this book to sci fi and even fantasy lovers.

A character-driven space opera. I’m impressed by how sincere the characters are and by how much I cared about them by the end.

Wonderfully written. I'm astounded at how incredibly insightful and thought-provoking the story is. The other books in the series are equally as good.

This is not the most plot-driven book in the universe, but I adored all the different characters and somehow it didn't matter to me that the bulk of the novel is small interactions and vignettes. I could put it down and walk away, but yet I always enjoyed sinking back into the world when I returned. When I was reading reviews of this, a lot of folks compared it to Firefly, and I can see why, in the sense of the crew here being a sort of found-family of interesting characters who all bump into each other in different and compelling ways. Several elements also reminded me of the crew interactions in the Mass Effect videogame franchise (one of my all-time favorites!). I'd definitely recommend this for folks who have enjoyed Ann Leckie and Martha Wells!

Well written. This is not just another Space war book. It's getting to know different planets and species. It's so fun . The flight crew are a delight to get to know.

One doesn't expect a sprawling space opera to be so small in focus, but this one was perfect that way. The focus is on the characters, their growth and trials. The sweeping events of the galaxy are woven in by how they impede the characters rather than commanding the story. An excellent tale.

A very enjoyable read, especially if you pick it up for a few bucks. I felt a definite Firefly vibe throughout the book, particularly in the development of the characters and their interaction as a family. These are also normal people doing extraordinary things, ala David Brin. There is also enough world building to satisfy most sci-fi fans.

This is the crew you want to travel space with.I felt befriended by them all before the story was over. I just bought the 2nd book and pre-ordered the 3rd. Keep 'em comming!

I read this sitting in my recliner in front of the fire, and rarely have I enjoyed winter days more. It is not epic, it is not trying to slowly introduce you to a horde of people you will have trouble keeping straight. Rather it is a tale of adventure, pathos, human (and not so human :) )nature, commonality amongst all odds and the most delightful ships crew since Firefly! As I read this I became more and more excited as I began to realize that this book was going to be as fantastic as the first time I ever met the crew of Serenity. I literally had to restrain myself and allow the story to unfold slowly so I could savor every nuance of the crews interactions and adventures. Becky, thank you for a wonderful tale, I will be forever grateful to you for this and now I am off to read A Closed and Common Orbit. Be well and Please don’t stop writing! Ever!

Fun space opera with a lot of heart. Outstanding characters and universe-building. Aliens that actually feel alien, while still being infinitely relatable. Hard not to get attached to the whole cast. Really looking forward to joining the Wayfarer crew on another adventure.
