Overview

The Lycaning by Lori R. Lopez

This is not your traditional wolfman tale. An inventive and original take on a horror classic, THE LYCANING creates a new breed of the monster and a society transformed by a Werewolf Apocalypse. It is at the same time a story about love and sacrifice. Part Two delves deeper into the origins of character and plot. Secrets are revealed. Werewolves, humans, and were-zombies clash. PART ONE: How far will a mother go for the sake of her son? The answer is a disturbing twist on the Lycan legend as Lori R. Lopez (author of "Bloodpath" and "Heartbeat") depicts an experiment gone terribly awry. Charles is a man living with illness and deformity, working in a lab with his scientist mom whose primary goal has become the desperate search for a cure to his debilitating disease. Their work releases a plague that will transform the civilized world into a savage jungle of kill or be killed. Is there hope for Mankind, or will these new creatures wipe out the human race? PART TWO: As a man schemes to capture the male and female werewolves, Charles discovers the truth behind his original disease and the secrets his mother was keeping. Werewolves, humans, and were-zombies clash in a world filled with change.

About the Author

Part One of “The Lycaning” was originally penned for a werewolf anthology. Author Lori R. Lopez decided to combine the werewolves with zombies and create yet another mutant race of creatures, tossing in mad scientists like hot fudge on a Sunday. Oh sure, a Sundae too, preferably vegan. And she didn’t stop there. She had a beaker of green frothy serum left over for a Part Two, because that is how she writes and rolls . . . when she isn’t rocking on her imagination’s porch-swing or rocking-chair watching Monarch Butterflies and Bumble Bees and Hummingbirds flit and float through her Peaceful Place, a cottage by a lake — probably a lake filled with strange critters the likes of which have not been seen but give her time and you will see them, oh yes you shall! Ahem. Sorry, I tend to get carried away with excitement over the amazing mysterious things that crawl out of Lori’s ears from her brain. Speaking of mad scientists, Lori has been the Number One Fan of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, the tale and movies too, since she was a little girl like the little girl who was thrown into the lake by Frankenstein’s Monster. It was an accident, yet those villagers in old films tend to overreact and get out the pitchforks, light the torches . . . Of course, it wasn’t very nice and one should never harm children. They are precious, like animals and books. One should guard them well and treat them with respect. Unless they are the evil children with black eyes who try to kill you . . . or rabid, vicious, hungry . . . or an evil cursed tome . . . then you should run and not look back! Lore (her favorite nickname for herself) considers the corner of the office shared with two sons as a laboratory, envisioning a jumble of cool elaborate science gizmos and doodads surrounding her, test-tubes smoking, electricity surging, lightning strobing. Many authors require a quieter saner environment. Lori prefers being in the midst of madness and eccentric hubbub or hoopla. Now that you have peeked into her Creative Process, please exit up the stairs and to the left, and remember to warn others about her!
