Bought this for a long transatlantic flight and couldn't put it down! I loved his earlier book (Viper Pilot) but was really excited to see him branch out into fiction. As a pilot (ex military and commercial) I can say absolutely that this rings true. The characters are very real, the dialogue is superb and the descriptions of China, Jordan and other places are spot on - I've been to most of them too. I've recommended this to all my fellow pilots who read fiction - hope there's more to come!

Gripping! Edge of the seat action and a plot that kept me turning pages! Dan Hampton's 'Viper Pilot' was an excellent non fiction memoir but he's made the jump to fiction! Hope it comes out in print soon but in the meantime I recommend this to anyone who loves thrillers! MORE!

You don't have to be a pilot to appreciate this story. Excellent read.

The Mercenary by Dan Hampton is a great read! This page-turner is a gripping thriller that brings you into the story immediately and doesn’t let you go. This is the kind of book I usually finish in one day. I had to force myself to read only a few chapters at a time and savor the experience. Each day, I thought about the story, wondered what would happen next, and anxiously, happily jumped back in each evening. The book is a “who done it and how do we catch him” in a military setting. But don’t be afraid if you are not a military buff. The story is not overloaded with tech or confusing terms. The Mercenary is really a detective story, but mostly without detectives. Dan Hampton’s story-telling is real, unrelenting, honest and easy to follow. Dan pulls from his own true life combat background as a decorated USAF F-16 Viper pilot to finely craft this novel. He succeeds brilliantly. Lt Col Doug “Axe” Truax is a fighter pilot, but he’s stuck with a dull assignment doing paperwork. He is drawn into solving a mystery, a mystery that keeps getting bigger and bigger! Axe uses his knowledge and experience to help a team find out the identity of the elusive Mercenary and attempt to stop him from completing his deadly agenda. Don’t read too many reviews and spoil it! People want to tell you too much, I want to tell you too much. Get this book right now and start your journey into the shadowy world and the cold & calculating mind of The Mercenary. You won’t be sorry!!!

He flies and kills. Over and over. Not a lot of subplots except some pretty vivid sex scenes that I am still wondering what they had to do with the story line at all. An ok book I guess just wait until a real discount before buying.

This book had lots of suspense. It is very brutal and violent and so may not appeal to all readers. I really enjoyed the book!

This is a very entertaining book. It is not a who-done-it, because you always know who did it. The chase for the perpetrator is very good. The perp is a man who has his very personal reasons for what he does. Maybe you will have some empathy for him. The author does understand the politics and narcissism of high ranking military officers. I highly recommend this book.

Good one!

A good read. Although there are some air combat scenes, most of the plot takes place on the ground. Still, it was a good thriller, and I'm looking forward any future novels from Dan Hampton.

The author of this novel actually was an F-16 pilot, and he knows his stuff. The book is fast paced and detailed. The characters were well developed. If you read his memoir, "Viper Pilot:A Memoir of Air Combat" you will notice similarities between the antagonist and the author. The antagonist is actually pretty likable, and I found myself rooting for him. He does bad things...but he does them to very bad people, mostly. And I like it when bad things happen to bad people! For a jet jockey he's a good writer, though I did find some spelling and grammar errors in all of his books. The fault for those lies with the editors. This was a very fun book to read.

A real "page turner" lots of guessing what is next.

Not Shakespear but doesn't make that claim. Slow start but picked up quickly and kept going til the end. Couple fudges on local detail I assume the author used to accommodate the story but otherwise very accurate. Am waiting for the next one. If you like a good thriller, you'll like this

I really enjoyed this book. I have a great respect for our armed forces and enjoy reading their books. They offer insight and details that someone without the experience could not. This bok kept the pages turning and kept my interest. I would highly recomend this book.
