In the early 1800's it was common for local newspapers and magazines to publish serialized fiction. An example would be Edgar Allan Poe, whose fiction was published by local printers and sold through subscription list around Philadelphia, Baltimore and New York. The novels of Charles Dickens were serialized in magazines. While he became the first popular fiction sensation in America his writing reached only a small segment of the population.
