This is really short but it is also one of the most well-written and engaging short stories I have had the pleasure to read. Stephanie Clanahan

3.5/5 J.A. Jance writes a number of series, but my favourite is Sheriff Joanna Brady. The Old Blue Line has been marketed as 15.5 in the series, as it is a novella. (The newest novel, Remains of Innocence has just released.) The Old Blue Line is actually Joanna's husband, Butch Dixon's story. Jance takes us back to the days before Butch met Joanna. Butch lost everything to his ex-wife seven years ago. He's made a new life for himself and no runs the Roadhouse Bar and Grill. But when the ex-wife is found murdered, Butch is the prime suspect. Even in death, Faith is out to get him. But Butch has friends - namely The Old Blue Line gang - retired cops and lawyers that are determined to clear Butch's name. Butch has always been a great supporting player in the Brady books, but we really don't know too much about his background. This little novella is told completely in Butch's voice. ( Joanna only makes an appearance in the last few pages.) The mystery in this case is short and sweet, as is the book, but it's still enjoyable. It was more about getting to know Butch better. Although, I'd like to see more of The Old Blue Line gang in future books. I actually chose to listen to The Old Blue Line. The reader was James Eckhouse. Eckhouse's voice is pleasant and easy to listen to, with clear diction. He's an expressive reader, using his voice to good effect. Eckhouse works as an actor and is good 'performer' in audio format as well.

Finally... we learn who Butch Dixon is!! He has been one of my favorite of Lady Jance's characters over the years, but he has only let a little about himself out to the masses. This story lets us see him back before he met Joanna and events leading up to the first meeting. Ms. Jance has always had a wonderful way with words... great descriptions of people, places and things... but she seems to have tightened everything up a bit. Still just as descriptive but here, it seems you know the character she is describing even before you realize she is describing them. And the characters are prefect for this story. Butch is being very carefully framed and old friends and new friends help him to sort the mess out. This is a must read for Joanna Brady fans... and for anyone who enjoys a darn good book!!! I am both... and I enjoyed the dickens out of it!!!

It is so nice to slip into a comfortable J.A. Jance book. I enjoyed reading more about Butch. She ties up all of her lose ends so well at the end.

I enjoyed this book to learn about Butch's background leading up to meeting Joanna Brady! I enjoy all of the J.A. Jance novels and always look forward to reading the next one.

I have really enjoyed the Joanna Brady series. I also recommend the J.P. Beaumont series.

I enjoyed reading about Butch, and how he got to where he is now. I generally don't care for novellas, but this was a nice break from some of the heavier reading.

Old Blue Line is a story about Butch Dixon and how is life is turned upside down upon the death of his ex-wife.  The twists and turns  in this story kept me in till the very end of the story.  It was a fast read but a good one.  I give it 4 stars.

The Old Blue Line was only 50 pages long! This is not a regular book length and I felt cheated when I got to the end. The publisher added a long teaser of the next Joanna Brady series by J.A. Jance - maybe 35 pages - but that did not satisfy me that I had received my money's worth.

Shorter than I was led to believe. I thought it was going to be an 88 page novella but it's really only about 50 pages. Not really worth the cost. Was under the impression it would be about Joanna Brady but it's actually about her husband Butch, and Joanna makes a very small appearance at the tail end of the story. Save your money...

First let me say that I totally get that this is a NOVELLA, not a full blown novel. Still, it was just so short that, by the time I finally got into it a little, it was over. I thought it was dry and disappointing, though, but I would assume that those who like the J. P. Beaumont series will probably enjoy this one more than I did. Let me just end my review, though, by saying it was no Joanna Brady novel. It did have a couple of interesting characters, but again, I'm not sure I would be interested in any "Butch Dixon" inspired novels in the future.
