Thomas McMurtrie’s been a Law Professor for many, many years. He was first attracted by a power politician and gradually built a reputation as a superb scholar, teacher, and writer. Now right when he’s having a tough time revising his latest edition on the classic legal text of legal evidence and having a tough time with a major physical problem, his world starts spinning totally out of control. The case is that against himself as a new, younger Dean of Students is trying to force Tom out of his teaching job at the University of Alabama. The Dean wants fresh young blood, not realizing that competence and legal brilliance don’t necessarily follow younger lawyers. It’s skill, experience and learning the ropes that makes the legal pro! Tom McMurtrie has all of those qualities – and more! Tom is about to refer a very important lawsuit case to his former friend and then opponent, Rick Drake. It involves a fatal crash between a gasoline container truck and a small private automobile. The result is devastating – families are bereft of their loved ones and all are afraid to pursue answers to their persistent questions. Was speeding involved? Has this been a pattern and who knew about it and is now covering it all up? Rick Drake is in way over his head and eventually may be forced to consult with someone with more experience! The story is simple in this phenomenally well-written first legal thriller, but the steps by which the topics of legal defense and legal community problems are handled is exemplary and bodes well for more exciting fiction from this new writer! Plot is everything in these pages – with enough insults, adventurous scenes, fights, misunderstandings, threats and more to sink a ship. But Tom McMurtrie is one hell of an investigator and lawyer, and that makes all the difference in the unexpected outcome of this mystery/crime thriller novel. Finely crafted, Richard Bailey – keep writing! This reviewer wants to read more of your style!

In his debut novel, The Professor, author Robert Bailey utilizes his extensive legal knowledge and experience interwoven with his passion for his alma mater, University of Alabama, to weave a riveting and unforgettable legal thriller that will captivate the reader's attention from beginning to end. This is a fast-paced story about greed, bribery, betrayal, and a fight for justice. It is a classic legal chess game set in Alabama between evil big business and corrupt politicians versus a seasoned legal professor and his young protegee, that provides a powerful and compelling story with enough gripping thrills and chills interspersed with drama and suspenseful twists and turns. What more could a fan of college football and legal thrillers want then to lose themselves in between the pages of this emotional story? The author does a wonderful job of interweaving his legal experience and passion for 'Bama football with richly detailed and descriptive references that easily transports the reader to a small town Alabama courtroom and the Crimson Tide campus where the legendary football coach Paul "Bear" Bryant ruled supreme. With a complex and realistic cast of characters; witty dialogue and dramatic heart pounding interactions; and a fascinating mystery/crime storyline with an authentic style that flows seamlessly from beginning to end; The Professor is a thoroughly entertaining legal crime story that takes the reader on one hell of a thrilling roller coaster ride!

This was one of those books you can't wait to finish to know what happens, but the closer you get to the end, the more you hate to get there as you're so enjoying the read. Wonderful read with great characters. Totally realistic plot line. Will definitely look for more from this author.

Good one although some of the supposed legal whizzes were disappointingly inept.

If you enjoy unforgettable characters, exciting action, and plot twists and turns, you will love The Professor! The characters are well developed and appealing. Place is so much a part of this novel that it almost becomes a character. I love a novel that shows justice being done, though at times the reader wonders how. This novel will hold you until the last page. Bailey's next novel, Between Black and White, is just as thrilling! Love the McMurtrie Drake series!

Robert Bailey has taken a few of the passions in his life and has woven them into a darn good story as his debut. Professor Tom has served the University of Alabama quite well over the years. First as member of Coach Bear Bryant's undeafeated 1961 football team, but more importantly as a distingushed Law Professor. Suddenly the rug is pulled out from under him. He is requested to meet with the University's Trustees. At this meeting, he is confronted by a former student who is the newly appointed attorney for the University. Recommended strongly for enjoyable evenings entertainment. J MLydon
