Ida B. Wells-Barnett was an early figure in the civil rights movement. She was born into slavery. She gained her freedom when the Emancipation Proclamation was declared. She suffered through various hardships, and became a journalist. She investigated the horrors of lynching and proved that it wasn't a tool of justice, but that it was a tool of terror and oppression.
