The Serpent Sea (Books of the Raksura Series #2) by Martha Wells

Nominated for the 2018 Hugo Award for Best Series

Moon, once a solitary wanderer, has become consort to Jade, sister queen of the Indigo Cloud court. Together, they travel with their people on a pair of flying ships in hopes of finding a new home for their colony. Moon finally feels like he’s found a tribe where he belongs. But when the travelers reach the ancestral home of Indigo Cloud, shrouded within the trunk of a mountain-sized tree, they discover a blight infecting its core. Nearby they find the remains of the invaders who may be responsible, as well as evidence of a devastating theft. This discovery sends Moon and the hunters of Indigo Cloud on a quest for the heartstone of the tree — a quest that will lead them far away, across the Serpent Sea.

In this followup to The Cloud Roads, Martha Wells returns with a world-spanning odyssey, a mystery that only provokes more questions — and the adventure of a lifetime.

The second, in what has become "The Books of the Raksura" series, is further adventures of Moon, who was a "feral" solitary, taken in to the Indigo Cloud court in book one. The court, decimated, and forced to move from their ancestral home, then again from their second home, by the evil Fell, welcomed Moon for more than one reason. He helped them escape the Fell, and he's a male consort, capable of mating with a queen, to perpetuate the court. In this book, the court has returned to it's original home, a colony tree, now free of the Fell, only to find that the magical "seed" of the tree, which keeps it alive, has been stolen. The hunt for the seed leads to a giant leviathan, with a city built on its back, in the ocean. The prime magister of the city, has stolen the magical seed, to reinforce the magical control over the leviathan. Sorry, normally I don't get carried away with the story line of the books I review, but I found this one fascinating. Great characters, a plot that twists, and turns, and at a decent pace, to hold your interest. Ms Wells could have ended the series here, but I just found out that there's a third book, "The Siren Depths", just published, that brings the evil Fell back into the court's life. For those who wish to check out this series, the first book is, "The Cloud Roads". I do recommend it, highly.

If The Cloud Roads was the bait, then The Serpent Sea was the hook that caught me. I really felt connected to Moon, Jade, Stone and Chime. I desperately wanted Jade and Moon to become parents together. Martha Wells held that out as a possibility for this book but wisely did not give in to this plot device. Instead, she created a very fun villain in the sorcerer on the sea creature. I think her descriptions of the city on the sea creature were imaginative and I enjoyed being involved with villains other than Fell. I think Martha Wells may have wanted a break from them as well. Good writing. Excellent character development. A solid, fun read that won't leave you feeling dirty for reading it like with G.R.R.M.

I was a little disappointed by this book because it reminded me of a Final Fantasy plot where a magical artifact must be recovered in order to "save the world." I felt like I'd read this story before, but the world created was still imaginative and interesting. I didn't dislike the book, but I thought the Cloud Roads was far superior because it gave Moon more character depth and the climax of Cloud Roads was more exciting, for me, than that of Serpent Sea.

I love the way this author builds her worlds -- they are utterly believable and beautifully drawn. This one in particular is impressively original. Finding a book populated by characters this diverse is impressive, and they suit this world perfectly. They're all so alien, and yet the protagonists are completely relateable. The plot moves quickly, and there is some satisfying character growth for Moon and the others. I loved it, and will look forward to the next book.

Ever since hearing that a sequel to The Cloud Roads was coming out, I've been eagerly waiting for it, and I was not disappointed. This is another great fantasy by one of the most innovative writers in the genre. All of the characters from the first book are back, including Moon, Jade, and Stone. Their new home is threatened, and as they deal with that we see more of the unique world that was created in the first book. We also see the characters develop and their relationships grow. Very satisfying and highly recommended.

Good story of a different race of 'people'. More lizard like than primate but intelligent and with a love of beauty. Also a society headed by Queens who are the head of the society. I truly enjoyed this book.

Wow! Did not see that coming- mostly. Btw, for curse words, type the first two letters, type < _ > with no spaces, then the rest of the word.
