State Trooper RIley Tatum has a past that very few people, if any, know about. When she was a teenager, she lived on the street. She's missing several days and the only thing she vaguely remembers is that there were men playing cards. She was left unconscious on the street with only 5 cards in her pocket .. a royal flush. Today she is first on the scene of the discovery of a teen prostitute and it's bringing back those memories. Found on this young girl are five cards ...with L O S E R written on those cards. Former FBI Agent Clay Bowman connects this murder with a serial killer from several years ago. Young girls who being murdered as part of a fiendish poker game. There was only one survivor ... Riley Tatum. Bowman and Tatum have a past .. a one night stand .. and Tatum is extremely unhappy to learn she cannot follow this serial killer unless she works with Bowman. She made one mistake with him and she's not about to make another. As for Bowman, in his defense, his wife his wife had died 6 months previously and he was not in the right place in his mind to start a new relationship. He handled it badly and would like a second chance. The serial killer, known as The Shark, has reared his head after 12 years of silence .. and his eyes are set on Riley. As more young girls are found murdered, Riley finds herself solidly in the middle of this case and facing more danger than she knows. Bowman is determined to protect her, even as he uses her for bait. Who will win the final game of chance? I have totally read this series out of order and it's great as each of the books are stand alone, complete and without cliff hangers. I have read many of this author's books and I have never been disappointed at what I found between the covers. Here romantic suspense books are cleverly written, with credible characters, and an even balance between the suspense and the romance. Highly recommended for those who love romantic suspense and crime fiction.

This book was outstanding!! I have read most of Mary Burton's books are so full of suspense they are so hard to put down. When the Shark returns to New Orleans State Trooper Riley Tatum knows that he is after her....She is the key. When she was a teenager living on street she was kidnapped, and has lost all knowledge of a few day. Later showing up drugged and on a bus with cards on her. The only thing she can remember is the sound of poker chips on a table and the smell of cigar smoke. When a guy from her past comes back. Can former FBI agent and now Shield Security Clay Bowman find the Shark before the Shark gets Riley and finishes what he started....

The Shark is the first book in Mary Burton’s new series, Forgotten Files. It’s a romantic suspense that is heavy on the suspense side. The romance plays a secondary role but it is still an important piece of the overall story. The story revolves around Virginia State Police Trooper Riley Tatum. Riley ran away from home when she was a teenager twelve years ago in order to escape her stepfather who was likely going to rape her. As a runaway, she was drugged, abducted, and later used as a prize in a life or death poker game. The problem is that she doesn’t remember any of it although it all comes crashing down on her when a bunch of dead bodies start showing up around town that happen to look just like her. Without taking away from any of the suspense, I’ll just say that Riley’s good police work gains the attention of a high stakes gambler called The Shark. The Shark just so happens to be the gambler who lost the bet that allowed Riley to be set free twelve years ago. The Shark never loses so he looks to have another chance at taking Riley’s life. Riley, with the help of former flame/former FBI agent Clay Bowman, isn’t going to be taken down easily. As Clay and Riley put the clues together, they rekindle the relationship that they had earlier on while Clay was her instructor at Quantico. As is always the case, their reconnection starts off a little bumpy but they figure things out. They both have their own baggage but Clay refuses to let any of that get in the way of keeping Riley safe. Clay and Riley are good together. The story is very original and you will be very surprised how it all ends. There’s also a supporting cast of pimps and prostitutes to add to the list of people that will likely need years of therapy alongside Riley. I was very satisfied with how things ended and look forward to reading the next book in the series. **Received a copy from Montlake Romance in exchange for an honest unbiased opinion.**

I love Mary Burton! Once I found out what a great author she was and how she could write these fantastic suspense thrillers I am always on the lookout for what she has coming out. For those of you who like romance and heart pounding suspense this is a book you have to read asap. The Shark has had Riley in his sites for years and after all of this time he is ready to “play” with her life again. Riley was forced to the streets at a young age after her mother died leaving her with a perv of a step-father. After coming in the crosshairs of the Shark and his sick gambling issue her life was spared after someone beat the Shark at his own game. Years later and after having Duke, a good samaritan who took her in, save her from life on the streets Riley had become a renowned cop who was known for tracking with her dog Cooper. One of the people who helped train Riley in law enforcement was Clay Bowman and he and Riley had a little hook up back in the day. So as the sexual tension grew again between Riley and Bowman the Shark was again in Riley’s life taking aim at not only her but her soon to be adopted teenage daughter. Bowman and the Riley were working hard to find out who the Shark was and who were these men that played against the Shark knowing that a human life was at stake. This book is properly listed as suspense because it kept you on the edge of your seat trying to figure out how this would all fall in to place. Be ready for one hell of a surprise once everything is played out. Does Riley and Bowman finally get their happily ever after or is the responsibility of having a teenage daughter and a career too much for these two to be able to make it? Now I’m waiting patiently for whatever Ms. Burton comes out with next. This book was provided as an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.
