The St. Lawrence: River Route to the Great Lakes

The St. Lawrence River forms part of the boundary between Canada and the United States and connects the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean. Historically, the river served as a vital waterway for the region's Native nations, European explorers, fur traders, and settlers. Today, about one-fourth of Canada's population lives along the scenic St. Lawrence River, and a sophisticated system of canals, dams, and locks lets seagoing ships travel all the way to Lake Superior.
