About the Author

David Michaels, PhD, MPH, is Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health. He served as Assistant Secretary of Labor for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) under President Barack Obama. Prior to that, he served under President Bill Clinton as Assistant Secretary of Energy for Environment, Safety, and Health.

Purpose: The aim is to enlighten the public about the incontrovertible links among so-called scientific evidence, payments received for these findings, and industries' desire to hide the facts.
Audience: The lay public, academics, policymakers, and especially public health professionals will find this book useful.
Features: The first sections set the tone for how "science-for-sale specialists" and the "product defense industry" work together to cover up the true story behind many of the U.S. public health issues. These issues include traumatic brain injuries in sports, the opioid epidemic, tobacco dangers, climate change, car industry dangers-diesel fuel and particulates, sugar dangers, and how the political parties address or uphold these deceptive practices.
Assessment: This book takes a bold stand, suggesting that scientific findings are for sale and often support the continuation of unhealthy practices. One finishes it feeling quite unsettled and disturbed about science, industry, and politics and their influence on our public health. There is no comparable book.
