Overview

The Way It Is

An advantage Keyshia Cole has over a lot of her young contemporaries is experience. As a foster child growing up in Oakland, she went through a lot of downs, and from the sounds of The Way It Is, her first album, she's had her share of complex relationships. Cole had a hand in the writing of just about every track, and she has a number of major players -- Kanye West, John Legend, Alicia Keys, Ron Fair (Christina Aguilera, Mya), E-Poppi (Missy Elliott, Destiny's Child) -- in her corner. With only a couple exceptions, The Way It Is is about the ugly parts of a romantic relationship, so there's little room left for upbeat material. From the opener, "(I Just Want It) To Be Over," the album seems to be set up like a linear narrative about a crumbling relationship, but it doesn't quite play out that way, with the scenes shuffled out of order. ("Love," one of the positive songs, comes after the song where the punk gets dumped and before the song where he's called out for changing.) None of it's all that profound, but Cole sells it all extremely well, especially on "I Should Have Cheated," where she tires of an accusing and hypocritical lover ("I should go have my fun and do all the things you say I do"). Cole's voice is sweet and ringing, like a wiser version of Lil' Mo who has had to weather a tremendous amount of drama. She could be around for a while. ("Never," her hit song from the Barbershop 2 soundtrack, is included.)

I purchased this CD & i must say it is nice & refreshing to hear some real vocals & hot beats...All the way thru from the beginning to end...I am loving Keyshia Cole, the girl can blow. She is a like a young Mary but edgy for the '05' & a sexy harmonious Brandy dropped in with a little Alicia(trying to do different)..wicked. Get this album, it's a must if you are looking for something new, different, upbeat & slow & smooth.

With this CD Keyshia has risen R&B back to life. Forget Usher and his "Confessions", "The Way It Is" is the realness R&B has been waiting for. Keyshia keeps it real and pulls for experiences in her life to come up with songs like "I Should've Cheated", "I Changed My Mind", and "Love", making "The Way It Is" a CD that her listeners can relate to. Everyone should own this CD.... the ladies because this is your anthem, and fellas because you can relate to some but you can also learn how to treat your ladies.

Oh my goodness when I first heard this cd in my friends car. I was like I need to go out and buy that. And I am so happy with this cd. I can play this cd all the way through and never get sick of it. It definitely a cd for women. This cd helped me with problems I was having. Good cd...I love it. If you don't have it yet go buy it.

Urban self- expression at it's best. I mean she truly delivers through- out this entire album. She's like a Mary J. of the new generation. From the tearing "I've should have cheated" & "Love, I thought you had my back this time", to the heavily related to "Changed" & "We Could Be", she makes it clear, "I've been through some s#$%! Something people of ANY age can relate to. Her vocal range is overall above average. I love "LOVE"! For this young lady, theres much anticipation for her sophomore album, and I speak for many, "I CAN'T WAIT"!

Keyshia's album is the bomb, from the first song. Her voice is so powerful and the messages of the songs are so real. I see a long career for this woman. I love ALL the songs but my favorites have to be #1,6 and 9. Highly recommend.

This cd has great songs and cute beats but Kheyshia is not a very talented singer, IMO the studio synthesizers don't help her out much at all and Miss Cole needs to step it up and get some vocal training so she can deliver a better sound to match the quality of her lyrics and outstanding beats. PLEASE note I am not a hater, I like the cd alot, I just think she can improve her sound greatly.

Finally an album like "The Way It Is" comes along and makes me realize that real soul music is from the streets. The first time I heard Keyshia Cole's remarkable and melancholic voice was on AOL Sessions. Immediately when I heard the horn session intro from "I Just Want It To Be Over," I knew I was missing out on something. Keyshia Cole can't be underestimated. She's come a long way for this album and she deserves all the credit.Wait until she tours, watch her shut all those mo'fos mouths out there that are talking trash about her talent. They did it to Alicia Keys and they did it to Mary J. when they debuted, but just like these two legends of R&B, she will prove them wrong. P.S. listen to "We Could Be."

WHEN I FRIST HEARD IT ON THE RADIO AND SEEN THE VIDEO I HAD TO GET IT!!! I AGREE THAT THIS ALBUM IS GREAT BUT EVERY TIME I SEE HER PREFORM ON TV LIVE..... SHE CAN'T REALLY SING. THIS ALBUM IS AN EXAMPLE OF STUDIO TECHNOLOGY... I CAN'T EVEN LISTEN TO THE ALBUM NOW AFTER HEARING HER IN PERSON BECAUSE I GET FLASH BACKS AND IT HURTS MY EARS.. SO I GUESS "IVE CHANGED MY MIND" ON KEYSHIA COLE.
