Overview

As ominous as the book cover and title seem to be, this inspiring true story is likely to evoke many more tears of joy than tears of sadness in readers. At its simplest, it is a story about family, a girl's search for her mother, from whom she was stolen when she was only 4 years old. Born in Erie, Pennsylvania, she is raised in Nazi Germany, so desperately lonely she naively puts sugar on the window sill each night in hopes of attracting a stork bearing a baby sister or brother.

After World War II, she dodges Russian border guard gunfire, and triumphs over one obstacle after another to find her mother, until there is only one obstacle -- the recurring drowning nightmare -- that she still must solve, in order to find lasting peace. Again, it is all a true story.

The author, a now-retired journalist with 37 years of experience as a reporter, columnist and editor, first heard the true story about 30 years ago. He conducted extensive interviews with the then-still-living main characters of the story. At one point, he resigned an editor-in-chief of an Ohio newspaper, to take a reporters job in Meadville, Pennsylvania, because that is where more than half of the real-life story, including the solution of the nightmare, unfolds.

Meet the Author

The author, a now-retired veteran journalist, finished writing the book approximately 15 years ago. However, not completely satisfied with the result, he never submitted it for publication.

Then, late in 2010, he received a phone call from his son in Austin, Texas. "Dad,
this story is so inspiring that we have to get your book published.''

After he hung up, Blood felt tears well up in his eyes. He hadn't been aware his son even had a copy of the book. The reversal of roles is what most touched him most. After all, he thought, isn't it the role of the parent to inspire and encourage the child? Here, it was the son mentoring the dad.

Blood went to the cellar, retrieved the manuscript and immediately went about rereading it and making changes and additions. The compelling true story needed no changes. Rather, he discovered he had been so intrigued by the story in Germany he waited too long to introduce and develop the characters in America.

He corrected the flaw.

His son, Steve, then assisted in submitting Then I Drown as an EBook with Barnes and Noble.

The author takes us through a life of generations and up to present day. It is a story about the extraordinary efforts put on the main character and those in her family to keep her safe as she makes the effort to freedom of America. Her motive is not only to be safe, but to find her mother who holds the key to unanswered questions through out her life. The true story also gives us information of war time and post war time in Germany and the Iron Curtain. I downloaded the sample and just had to buy the book! I am happy that I did so as I enjoyed the history lesson and fullness of characters.

I loved this book and couldn't put it down until I could find out what was causing these terrible dreams. A story which shows a mothers true love. Also, informative as to the Berlin wall and the pain those innocent people went through.

"Then I Drown" is a story which reaches the depths of human soul and yearning for love and relationship. This touching true story takes us through the life of a young girl in WWII and post-WWII Eastern Block. Meanwhile we also follow the life of her mother from whom she was taken back in America. The author paints with words the pictures and emotions of the entire story. The way in which the author alternates chapters between America and Europe keeps the reader on the edge of his or her seat. If you are looking for a book which instantly draws you into the life of the characters yet also shares some of the first hand experience of this time in history this is the book for you! A great read that I was not able to put down.

Thank you for finally publishing this story. Over the years I've only heard bits and pieces of Aunt Joyces story.
