Charmaine is a detective specialist with a new case. Marty suddenly died at his birthday party, possibly from a cardiac arrest. But there’s been some speculation that the wife may have had something to do with it. Although the story gets right to the case from the start, it kind of has a lagging progression. Charmaine certainly tries to play the quirky, off-beat character, which makes her slightly likable; however, she didn’t quite reach the par. She was okay, but not great. There were also a few too many characters—something I tend to get annoyed about on a regular story, but especially more so in a murder mystery. That may have over-complicated the plot a bit. Actually I had a hard time weeding through the plot, to be perfectly honest. I think I would’ve liked it better had the story started before Marty’s death. Maybe I would’ve understood it better had I been acquainted with the events leading up to Marty’s death, but I guess that was really up to Char to figure out. It’s just that I wasn’t too keen on her style.

Reviewed by Samantha Dewitt (Rivera) for Readers' Favorite Char’s job working at the courthouse hasn’t been the easiest all the time, but she’s determined to make the most of it. When she’s sent to do a little digging around the death of an elderly and very wealthy member of the community, she’s certain it’s nothing to be concerned about … until the interviews start making her question a whole lot more. Unfortunately, she’s on her own in this investigation because, until she finds evidence, no one will believe her and she can’t seem to find all the evidence without a little bit of questioning, which is making someone more than a little suspicious. But there’s no one to trust when everyone from the man’s own children to his ex-wife and even his best friend are suspects in the crime in There’s Something About Marty: A Working Stiffs Mystery, Book 3 by Wendy Delaney. This is one of those books where you never know what’s going to come next. You start reading and you think you know who’s behind it and then you find out that there’s something entirely different going on. It’s going to keep you guessing quite a bit and it’s the type of book that you want to keep reading until it’s done. I really liked Char because she seemed to be a very relatable character with flaws (who can’t relate to eating a little more dessert than we should?) and I found myself really interested in other characters like Estelle, Phyllis, Marietta (or Mary Jo) and Marty’s family. There’s Something About Marty is definitely a book I would recommend.

Reviewed by Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite There's Something About Marty: A Working Stiffs Mystery, Book 3 is a cozy murder mystery written by Wendy Delaney. While this is the third book in Delaney's Working Stiffs series starring amateur sleuth Charmaine Digby, the author provides enough background information for new readers to enjoy this book on its own. Digby is working at the Chimacan County Coroner's Office, and she's been asked by her boss Frankie Rickard, the County Prosecutor, to touch base with Darlene McCutcheon regarding the recent and sudden death of her ex-husband, Marty. While Dr. Cardinale, who had attended the stricken man when he was brought to the emergency room, diagnosed his death as due to cardiac arrest stemming from cardiovascular disease, Darlene felt it important to share her suspicions regarding the events that led up to his sudden illness and ensuing death. Marty had died on his birthday after eating a celebratory dinner and getting violently ill immediately afterwards. While Darlene's suspicions were aimed at the deceased's new younger wife, Victoria, whose three husbands had all died suddenly and left her a fairly wealthy widow, there were any number of possible reasons for his death and a number of suspects for Digby to investigate. Wendy Delaney's murder mystery, There's Something About Marty: A Working Stiffs Mystery, Book 3, is a light and frothy, humorous cozy mystery set on Washington State's Olympic Peninsula. The author offers plenty of red herrings and scads of gossip and innuendo for the reader and her plucky amateur sleuth to puzzle over. The Olympic Peninsula is one of my favorite travel destinations, and I enjoyed searching the internet for each of the locations Delaney describes in her book. There's Something About Marty works quite well as a mystery.

Reviewed by Anna Smith for Readers' Favorite There's Something About Marty (A Working Stiffs Mystery Book 3) by Wendy Delaney is the third mystery in this series. When Marty McCutcheon dies, everyone suspects his young widow since this is her third husband to die. Even Deputy Coroner Charmaine “Char” Digby is convinced they have a black widow on their hands. That is, right up until Victoria McCutcheon asks Char to solve Marty's murder. Why would Victoria ask Char to dig into Marty’s death if she is his murderer? Char wonders if there is more to this murder than meets the eye. Could someone else be setting Victoria up, knowing the police would look at her first when it came time to line up suspects in her husband’s death? There’s little evidence, so Char has to rely on her gut feelings and intuition in order to solve this case. Hopefully before she steps into the line of fire and the killer tries murdering again... There's Something About Marty is a fun murder mystery that is well-written and well-executed. I liked the balance that Wendy Delaney was able to create. There were just enough clues to keep me interested (and not totally surprised when the killer was revealed), but not so many that I figured out what was going on until the very end of the story. That isn’t always an easy feat to do, but Delaney did it masterfully. I enjoyed Char’s character and trusted her instincts in this story. If she believed a character, I did, too. But if she still thought there was something else going on, I couldn't wait to read more.

A well written, wonderful mystery! In this third book of the Working Stiffs Mystery series, author Wendy Delaney has delivered a truly entertaining mystery that pulled me in from page one. THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARTY is the first book I’ve read in this series, but it certainly won’t be my last. I also plan to go back and read the first two. I enjoyed protagonist Charmaine Digby. She was so interesting to spend time with. And I really like that she is a “deception detection specialist” aka human lie detector. It will be intriguing in future installments to see how often that super power may let her down. The supporting characters that round out the series are multi-layered and add just the right feel to this series. Author Delany’s writing style is crisp and clear, flowing across the pages in a way that compelled me to read just one more page, just one more chapter, until I found myself at the end of the story in record time! I’m very much looking forward to my next visit into Ms. Delany’s world.

This is the first book I have read by Wendy Delaney. I am now addicted! I loved the characters and small town charm. And we all know small town's have lots and lots of gossip. Who doesn't love a little juicy gossip once in awhile. Boy does part time Deputy Coroner and full time Prosecutors Assistant, Charmaine, Char have tails a wagging in small town Port Merritt. She has her childhood crush the hot Detective Steve Sixkiller in her life and she is seen having dinner with the most eligible bachelor Kyle Cardinale. Oh and if I didn't mention he is a hot, hot ER Doctor that everyone drools over. And the kicker to this is she has been keeping her relationship with Steve on the down low from her best friends and Steve is wondering WHY??? Things go from bad to worse for Char when she is told to interview the grieving family of Marty McCutcheon. He ran into some really bad luck and died on his 63rd birthday. And with a heart history and bad eating habits the Corner is not convinced that it is just not a heart attack. Even the hot ER Dr is saying it is a heart attack. Char now has to deal with the Ex wife Darlene crying foul and saying that his new sexy wife killed Marty! YIKES!!! What has Char gotten herself into??? She has a small list of suspects but no evidence and a boyfriend telling her to leave it alone. Char doesn't listen and starts to investigate thinking this could be a poisoning. She finds a lot of skeletons in people's closets and people don't want them out! Will she be able to find the truth before another life is lost? Will she be able to keep her hunky detective or will it all go south? This book was a fun fast paced entertaining read. A lot of humor and twists and turns keep you on your toes. This is a must read! *Some sexual innuend and language

This is one of my favorite series to cuddle up with and read and “There’s Something About Marty” is such a great addition to the series! With a perfect cast of characters that feel like old friends, it’s so nice to get sucked into their world and see what they are up to. Charmaine Digby or as she is known to her friends and family “Char” who is the main character is a human lie detector who can tell when someone isn’t telling the truth and who was hired by the County Coroner’s Office to work on cases to see if a suspect is lying. Charmaine goes much deeper into the case to try and solve them and that is where the fun always begins! With a hunky boyfriend, Steve Sixkiller who is a detective on the Port Merrit police department, Char has her hands full juggling solving the crime and keeping her investigations from him. Wendy Delaney has created a fun series with fun dialog, friendly people, a great mystery with twists and turns which is hard to figure out the “who done it”. This is definitely a series that should be read in order starting with “Trudy, Madly Deeply” to find out how it all began in this wonderful cozy mystery. I know you will love it as much as I do!
