Originally an orphan boy from Ottoman Macedonia, Stoyan Christowe arrived in the United States in 1911. He would go on to become a respected writer and a state senator for Vermont. "This Is My Country" is his fourth semi-autobiographical novel. He wrote about the life of early immigrants from southeastern Europe, who flooded America's shores at the start of the twentieth century. They contributed to building monumental American transportation routes such as the Great Northern Railroad.

It was one of the five books found on President Franklin D. Roosevelt's bedside table when he passed away. It was a birthday gift from his wife.
