Time's Edge by Rysa Walker

To stop her sadistic grandfather, Saul, and his band of time travelers from rewriting history, Kate must race to retrieve the CHRONOS keys before they fall into the Cyrists’ hands. If she jumps back in time and pulls the wrong key—one that might tip off the Cyrists to her strategy—her whole plan could come crashing down, jeopardizing the future of millions of innocent people. Kate’s only ally is Kiernan, who also carries the time-traveling gene. But their growing bond threatens everything Kate is trying to rebuild with Trey, her boyfriend who can’t remember the relationship she can’t forget.

As evidence of Saul’s twisted mind builds, Kate’s missions become more complex, blurring the line between good and evil. Which of the people Saul plans to sacrifice in the past can she and Kiernan save without risking their ultimate goal—or their own lives?

About the Author

Rysa Walker is the author of the runaway hit Timebound, which was the 2013 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Grand Prize winner, and the novella Time’s Echo. Walker grew up on a cattle ranch in the South, where her entertainment options included talking to cows and reading books. On the rare occasion that she gained control of the television, she watched Star Trek and imagined living in the future, on distant planets, or at least in a town big enough to have a stoplight. She now lives in North Carolina with her husband, two sons, and their golden retriever, Lucy.

I have always had a fascination with time travel. This book held my attention very well and will certainly read more of Rysa Walker in the days ahead.

"It's a hard lesson in life, but you have to accept that some things are out of your hands...You mend what you can, and you let the rest go." Kate is back again in Rysa Walker's second addition in the series, The Chronos Files. We are immediately thrown back into the time-travel struggle with Kate jumping to Dallas, TX in November 1963 just before the Kennedy assassination. Kate and one other person, Kiernan, who is not a Cyrist, are able to use their Chronos keys, while Kate's grandmother and other Chronos members have to educate and sit idly by, helpless. Kiernan has an altered memory before the first time shift in the previous book, Timebound, of a different Kate with whom he fell in love. Kate has a boyfriend, Trey, whom also doesn't remember their relationship from the second time shift. So, here we have Kiernan in love with another time Kate; Kate in love with another time Trey; and Trey memory-less. This makes for a very awkward love triangle that spans over 100 years! Kate and Kiernan attempt to track her grandfather, Saul, and aunt through time to stop them from altering the universe in order to shape and modify their Cyrist religion and followers. Interesting to think about, one day you are a Catholic, the next day you've been a devout Cyrist your entire life, all the while being none the wiser. Saul's intentions are to eventually run the world politically and religiously by capturing all the Chronos medallions in existence, so no one can alter what he has achieved, and he can remain in control of time itself. He is so desperate to achieve super-stardom, authoritarianism, dictatorship, for himself at whatever the cost, which is always people's lives and memories. This novel is a great follow-up to the first, delving deeper into the intricacies of Rysa Walker's imagination, ready to go where she will lead us. That's a little Cyrist-y. Walker has a great talent in weaving this storyline together, which I'm sure can become convoluted from all the time shifts and time travel.

A seventeen year old time traveler fights to prevent a large chunk of humanity from being wiped out by a megalomaniac! Kate is a normal seventeen year old girl who also happens to be humanity’s last hope to defeat a cadre of rogue time travelers. These evil agents destroyed CHRONOS, an agency in the far future who study the past to learn from it by living in the time periods in which they studied. Instead, led by Saul, Kate’s grandfather, they are reshaping history to their own ends, creating and planting the seeds of a new religion, the Cyrists, throughout strategic points in history to manipulate history, creating a better future. That future is being reserved for people who follow the Cyrists own world-view. But Saul plans a culling of those whom he deems not fit to survive. Pickup up directly from the first book in the CHRONOS Files trilogy, Timebound, the book starts with a bang by giving Kate a mission in 1963, in the moments before JFK is assassinated. Kate is attempting to collect CHRONOS keys, which are medallions that enable CHORNOS agents to travel through time, doing this to prevent Saul from using them for his own ends. As Kate travels throughout history in various parts of the world, she begins to gather these keys but along the way, stumbles upon some secrets that Saul doesn't want her to find out. From a lynching in the south to the poisoning of a small town, Kate starts to see the big picture and strategizes how to stop it. But if Saul and his compatriots find out she’s traipsing through time collecting CHRONOS keys, it will become an all-out war that Kate will not be able to win. Aided only by a small band of allies who are aware of Kate’s time traveling abilities, Kate has her grandmother Katherine, Katherine’s historian assistant & friend Connor, Kate’s father and her boyfriend Trey. There is also Kiernan, the only other time traveler who can help her, who also happens to be Connor’s grandfather (!). However, while a proven ally, is Kiernan telling Kate the whole truth? Time travel and the passing of the time-traveling gene from one generation to the other makes for an interesting family tree but also many, many time-twisting adventures and complications. You might come for the time travel as I did, but you’ll stay for the characters. Each one of them has a rich and varied history, nuance, quirks and motivations that ground them in the story, keep your interest and has a reason for being there. You get to know them very well as they evolve and you care about their outcomes in the midst of the time traveling cold war going on here that starts to heat up as Kate takes action. The sense of a high-stakes adventure, as well as feeling that (literally) anything can happen to these characters as they time travel makes for a lot of tense close calls, life-threatening situations, causing Kate to triple-think her decisions and ratchets up the tension, making for a very entertaining and riveting story. The satisfying finale deftly sets up the final book in the trilogy, pushing the story in unexpected and tantalizing directions while planting the seeds for a final showdown between Kate & her allies against Saul and the Cyrists who stand against her. I can’t wait to see what happens next - bring it on! :) Please note that I was given an Advanced Readers Copy of this eBook by NetGalley. A favorable review was never asked for nor expected.
