I'm former military myself, a Vietnam-era vet, and I enjoy military history. This memoir from a citizen soldier who rose from the ranks to a command position was an intriguing look at how a conflict’s underbelly operated. The author’s smooth style made reading about the “winning their hearts and minds” aspect of our actions in Africa, The Balkans, and “The Sand Box” an informative pleasure. It was at once very personal yet nonpartisan. Well done!

"To Win Hearts and Minds" by Terry Mitchell—a must read novel by anyone interested in the military or a person in or considering making the National Guard a career should read "To Win Hearts and Minds." Terry Mitchell never allowed society to determine his career, he knew what he was capable of achieving and worked for it. Truly inspiring.
