Johnny Heller embodies Tommy Dash, an aging, self-absorbed stand-up comedian who is confronting a lifetime of regrettable behavior, including substance abuse. On the surface, Tommy Dash is an unlikable character, but Heller’s spot-on narration illuminates Dash’s hidden humanity. Listeners quickly find themselves rooting for him as he sets out to make amends and become a sober, trustworthy, caring human being. Heller’s portrayal of this crass, clueless, oddly endearing character inspires equal measures of empathy and exasperation as Dash struggles to rebuild relationships and reignite his waning career.
