Documenting the death of my family members has allowed me to free my mind and heal in a way I never expected. It transformed my life. Follow along as seven lives unfoldeach unique, each complex. This snapshot into the struggles of growing up dirt poor in Alabama and the subsequent migrations to Detroit and New York gives readers a glimpse into the Deep South and our traditions. As for burying lost loved ones, our traditions may be completely new to you: viewings, wakes, and Home Going services. Funerals are celebrations in the hearts and minds of Christian African Americans. Most importantly, conquering sorrow and leaning on faith are themes woven throughout the book. It truly is a must-read, for my mission is to encourage others as they walk through the darkest hours. Hope and healing are on the horizon.

About the Author

Velma Jackson-Wilkins is a retired executive who spent over 35 years in Corporate America. Her native roots in Alabama stretch to Manhattan where she lives with her husband. She frequently travels home to visit her family.

Self-sufficiency and faith were lessons learned early on in a childhood spent in grinding poverty. She grew up in the Deep South and is the only one of eight children to achieve a college education. She holds a Bachelors of Science degree from Alabama State University and a Masters of Business Administration from Pace UniversityLubin School of Business.

Velma credits her departed sister Louvet with paying it forward and assisting her throughout her academic career. This has allowed Velma to reach back to her many nieces and nephews and assist them in their educational goals.
