Chris Bristow was a promising English racer who died very young while attempting to pass Willy Mairesse's Ferrari at Spa-Francorchamps during the Belgian Grand Prix of 1960. In doing so he took a line that caused him to veer off the circuit and was it impossible for him to recover from. Bristow's Cooper was one of two fatalities at Spa on that Sunday afternoon. The other driver, also English, was Alan Stacey who spectators believed was struck by a bird, causing him to lose control of his Lotus.
