3.75 stars Umberland reads more middle-grade, but it's more dark and much weirder than Everland, which I really enjoyed. I really liked the Labyrinth plot and I thought Spinale was very creative in her use of the Alice story elements. I also liked that we got chapters from Jack's perspective since I found him the most interesting character from the last book. However, I don't find these characters very memorable. I wouldn't be able to differentiate Alyssa from Gwen and Alyssa's relationship with Maddox is almost the same as Gwen's relationship with Pete from Everland. There's insta-love and of course, the Mad Hatter is really hot. I was also surprised that Pete was so angry in this book and I was disappointed that such a fun characters was written to be so nasty in this book. I also noticed that there were a lot of spelling errors, which is completely shocking to me. I have never read a professionally published novel with so many missed errors. If I were Spinale, I'd be pretty upset that this wasn't proofread further before it went to press. Overall, I found this dark, quirky book quite fun to read and I liked that the stakes were upped quite a bit. But the characters aren't great, there's some insta-love and there are numerous errors in the text which dropped my rating down. Would recommend if you're looking for a fun, silly read.

Umberland by Wendy Spinale was a truly wonderful and well written book of the fantasy genre. Having read and enjoyed Everland, the first book in the series, I didn’t expect the the second book in the series to be anywhere as close to as good as the first book, but I was pleasantly surprised. Umberland was just as good as Everland- and maybe even better. The language was very good. The plot was also as good as I had hoped for. As Umberland begins, Gwen and Pete have escaped from Everland. However, Alnwick Castle is not as safe as they had hoped it would be, and they must begin a dangerous mission inside a deadly labarinth. Wendy Spinale kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the entirety of book. I would would recommend Umberland to tweens and teens who love action-packed fantasy stories. If you love a good read and a great story, this is the book for you. Meagan W., 14, Columbus Area Mensa
