Description: This book is a comprehensive, simple review of normal and pathological alterations in physiological function across the lifespan from childhood to aging adults.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide basic and easy-to-comprehend information about pathophysiologic mechanisms of disease.
Audience: This edition is meant to be an elementary version of pathophysiology and the intended audiencer is the beginning level practitioner in healthcare areas. This would also be excellent text for undergraduate nursing classes.
Features: The book is divided into two parts. In the first section the contributors discuss the cell, basic cell function, immunity, and alteration in function (cancer). The second section of the book contains reviews of the body system by system and diseases related to each system. Each unit begins with a chapter or two on normal physiology. In the following chapters pathological changes from normal are reviewed. The last chapter in each unit includes a discussion of alteration in physiological function in children. Each chapter has great color illustrations highlighting the core concepts. There are also illustrations and information boxes regarding health promotion and risk management called "Health Alert." There are information boxes called "Quick Check" in which thought-provoking questions are asked in an attempt to stimulate some critical thinking. At the end of each chapter there is a concise review called "Did You Understand." The book also comes with an interactive CD in which a variety of enhanced learning activities and a printable chapter summary are provided.
Assessment: I would recommend this book for those teaching and reviewing basic pathophysiology. There are many positive improvements since the first edition. The book has wonderful color illustrations, useful health promotion information, easy to follow algorithms, and thought-stimulating information boxes.
