After reading this novel I was surprised that I had not heard of this author before. Gilman does a beautiful job of relaying the story without being overly flowery and melodramatic. Yes, some parts are a bit hard to believe, but that is also part of the charm. Mrs. Pollifax is a wonderful character with many layers. I thouroughly enjoyed being taken on this adventure with her and look forward to reading the rest of the series.

I had read almost all the existing Mrs. Pollifax novels, but I could never manage to find the first one in any stores. When I finally did find it I devoured it within a day. I could not put it down. I was extremley happy to discover just how the delightful Mrs. Pollifax became a CIA agent. I also learned quite a few new things about her. She is a very realistic character, and one that almost every one can relate to. She is very resorceful, and at the same time very funny and sometimes a little naive. This book is sure to capture your intrest and keep it.

The fact that this book was written about a little old lady spy during the height of the Cold War is a major part of its charm. It reminds us of the perspective of those who lived through this era. The hisorical remembrances are great but they are well-enhanced by an interesting plot. While it is quite far-fetched to think this could actually happen, we have toremember it is fiction and read it as such. Great story. Stephanie Clanahan

Cozy mystery meets James Bond in this highly enjoyable and satisfying, if not particularly believable, novel. I had enjoyed several of the books in this series as a teen and recently picked up this first book in the series at the library for a re-read. The book's cold war milleu may feel a bit dated today, and the Chinese and Albanian heavies may feel overly inept, but it's still a lot of fun. There is something very likable about the unlikely Mrs. Pollifax.

Slow starting, but very good. Unbelievable, but good escape

Seeking to give her life meaning, widowed Mrs. Pollifax applies to be a spy with the CIA. She's sent on a simple currier assignment for Carstairs, but things go wrong and she is kidnapped. Can she use her wits to escape? The story is highly improbable, but I absolutely fell in love. The final third still make me turn pages quickly even though I remember all the twists from the first time it kept me up all night to finish.

This book was very creative but i doubt that any random old lady would be able to walk into that office and 'acedentaly' get that job. Its not very realistic; like how she somehow becomes friends with the guards in Albainia. Also the author dosnt give a description of what dear old Mrs.polifaz looks like so i cant really get a good image of her. This book though did keep mr reading it; not just because i had to for an English report but because i wanted to see what oddly funny scheem she came up with next.
