Description: This is a pocketbook review of the basics of urodynamic principle and practice in which the authors focus on various types of voiding dysfunction and their distinct urodynamic patterns. This second edition contains many diagnostic and treatment algorithms and multicolor charts which make the book eminently readable.
Purpose: The objective is to "dispel the image that urodynamics is a complex subject." Certainly many healthcare providers are intimidated by urodynamics and the attempt to present it in an organized, easy to understand fashion is a laudable goal and one which the authors meet.
Audience: Physicians, primarily urologists or gynecologists with an interest in voiding dysfunction, are the target audience, though nurses and other healthcare professionals can gain from it too.
Features: The core of this book is the chapter on urodynamic techniques which is a concise and readable review of the reasons for different components of urodynamic testing as well as the practical points involved in performing and evaluating urodynamic tests. It is supplemented by diagrams and examples of urodynamic tracings that help the reader grasp the pertinent concepts. The authors follow this discussion with methods for putting these techniques into practice by reviewing common types of voiding dysfunction and their particular urodynamic findings.
Assessment: This is a useful, easy to read, and concise book, which should be suggested reading for anyone with an interest in voiding dysfunction and urodynamic testing. All of the basics of urodynamics from theory to practice, as well as the more common types of voiding dysfunction, are fully reviewed in a comfortable fashion. This book's small size and brevity make it very appealing and much more likely to be read when compared to some of the larger, thicker textbooks of urodynamics currently on the market.
