Vanished by Danielle Steel

Vanished tells the story of a man and woman faced with an almost unthinkable tragedy—the mysterious abduction of their son.

In the late 1930s, in the shadow of the Lindbergh kidnapping, and as war looms in Europe, Marielle Patterson shares and elegant Manhattan brownstone with her husband, Malcolm, and their little boy, Teddy. Though the couple's lives are filled with secrets, Marielle is a devoted wife and mother, and Malcolm is a man everyone admires.

On the eve of Teddy's disappearance, Marielle runs into her first love, American expatriate Charles Delauney. And when Teddy is kidnapped, Charles is first blamed, then arrested. But as the search for Teddy widens, even Marielle is scrutinized by the FBI and special agent John Taylor. Suspicions and accusations mingle with terror and heartbreak as every threat, every failure, every fear, is remembered, examined, explored.

During Charles Delauney's trial, a series of revalations begins to unravel the about Marielle, Charles, and Malcolm, uncovering the motives and passions controlling their lives.

Vanished is a tale of guilt, desire, suspense, and of people drawn inexorably together, seeking the child who... vanished.

Ms. Steel has a wonderful talent for writing about characters who are real. We don't always like them, but that's the way life is. Her characters are never one-dimensional. At first I thought this book was going to be slow, and Marielle's 'weakness' was driving me crazy at first! But, then the book explodes into such gripping drama that you can not put it down! Excellent!

This was one of the best Danielle Steel books I have ever read. It was very touching, and quite different from her other books. I like the trial side of this story and it really illustrates Steel's ability to write in different circumstances.

This story shows the strong bond of love between a mother and her son. It brought tears to my eyes and nothing ever made my heart ache as it did after reading this touching story. It is one of Steele's best works.

This is a book that keeps you wanting to find out what will happen next right up till the last page. Marielle is a very strong person, but at times she seems so weak. She has been through a lot in her life and still at the hands of her new husband Malcolm, where she thinks she has security, she will face one of her biggest fears. This is the story of Marielle, who overcomes one major tragedy in her life just to be thrown into another that may nearly destroy her or show her strength that she never really knew she possessed. Another one of Danielle Steel's great books that is so very hard to put down. A MUST read book.

This was the first Danielle Steel book I had ever read, and they only got better. This book was hard to put down and made me keep coming back to it. I recommend it for anyone who is a romantic, but also enjoys a taste of the law.

Vanished is a wonderful book. Steel makes you think the unimaginable, then you refuse to believe your own thoughts. The book brought tears to my eyes several times.
