Waiting by Carol Lynch Williams

In one moment

it is over.

In one moment

it is gone.

The morning grows

thin, grey

and our lives-

how they were-

have vanished.

Our lives have changed

when I walk in

on Lizzie

my sister

holding a shotgun.

Twelve year old girl Hope's life is turned upside down when her older sister Lizzie becomes an elective mute and is institutionalized after trying to kill herself. Ever since their dad died Hope and Lizzie have relied on each other from a young age. Their mother is a reluctant and unreliable parent at best, and it's up to Hope to discover the terrible secret that's eating away at Lizzie before it's too late.

Named to the Young Adult Library Services Association 2011 Best Fiction for Young Adults and Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers lists.

"An edge-of-the-seat thriller written in sharp, glinting shards of words. Held in, held back, whispered and shouted. Fantastic!” —Tim Wynne-Jones, author of The Uninvited

"Glimpse is a subtle punch in the gut. Once again, Williams’ has captured the poignancy of a pair of loving sisters who are savaged by a dysfunction or disturbed mother. That sick chemistry, the fact that the caretaker entrusted with the greatest responsible is the perpetrator of unspeakable trauma, makes this story chilling and unforgettable. Fortunately, Williams doesn’t lead her readers to the brink of the chasm of despair and shove them in; instead, she demonstrates how courage, resilience, and love can help young people in the most dire of situations survive. This is a book I will read again and one I will recommend to teachers and to my own students." Chris Crowe, author, professor at BYU and former ALAN president.

I haven't even read the book yet and i'm already serioisly angry with myself for purchasing it. I paid $10 for this book and it was over 2MB in size ....and ends up being only 105 pages long (but the story doesn't even start until pg. 15) AND... the words don't even fill the pages...when I noticed the first couple pages weren't filled, I skipped ahead and and noticed that some page sonly have 1 sentence...flippin' ridiculous! Maybe the author was trying to go for a poetic/artsy flow...and more power to her...but nobody should have to pay $10 for such little content. I read reviews on "Waiting" before purchasing .... and maybe I should have read every single review ... but not one of the reviews mentioned these issues. I still plan on reading this book and will keep an open mind going into it, but I highly doubt the author was successful in sufficiently fleshing out the characters and giving the story any sort of depth in such a small amount of pages and words. Who knows...maybe i'll be proven wrong and if so...I will post an apology. Here's hoping....

This book was amazing! I cried whenever i read it. Its really good though. It helps you realize that you will get through tough times and kill.ing yourself is NOT the answer. Cause all it does is hurt everybody around you.
